Angie Hammond

Hi, guys, Welcome to prime time Crime. It's Kylie. We are going to dive right into right now in true crime. I don't have a ton to talk about, so we're going to keep it hopefully short and sweet, because you know I can ramble. So first thing I want to talk about is finally, the Idaho governor has signed an executive agreement to officially extradite Lori Valo to Arizona to face murder charges in the death of her husband, Charles Vallow. We are on our way to getting justice for everyone that was wronged by these horrific, horrific humans, Lorii and Chad and Lourie's niece Melanie is also facing charges against her ex husband, Brandon Boudreau. So we are slowly but surely getting their Chad's trial starts in April. I'm going to have to like take a leave of absence from like life for that. It's just going to be a whole thing. Because I do think that they might allow cameras in the courtroom because he wants cameras in the courtroom. It's going to be really interesting to see what goes on, what happens, But either way, we are on our way to getting justice for all of the people that these people so wrongfully murdered and everyone that they hurt along the way, their extended family, their actual family. It's been a journey. So we're so glad that we are finally on our way to getting justice for everyone. Charles included because he was a victim of this as well, and honestly, it still breaks my heart to this day watching that body cam footage from when he called the cops because he said that she was threatening to kill him and she was afraid, he was afraid that he was going to hurt their son. And fast forward to just a little while later when all of those things came true and Charles was the first one to alert anyone to it, just said, so I will keep you updated on that. The next thing I want to talk about is this guy named Joseph David Emerson. He is was a he still is a pilot for Alaskan Airlines, So this story is wild. He was an off duty pilot on this flight and he's facing eighty three attempted murder charges after he allegedly tried to shut off the engine of the plane mid flight. And the whole reason that he did this is because he took some psychedelic mushrooms two days beforehand and he had it slept and it was a whole thing, so let's talk about it. He's forty four years old. He was riding in the cockpit of the airplane as an unauthorized occupant Sunday evening and he unsuccessfully luckily tried to disrupt the engines about halfway between Astoria and Portland. And he was basically sitting in in the cockpit jumped seat and then he was chatting for chatting with the pilots for a few minutes, and then he just said, I'm not okay, and then he pulled the handles of the fire suppression system which is used to stop engine fires and shut off the fuel to the engines, aka like bring the plane down. So one of the pilots grabbed him while the other one declared an in flight emergency, and he did resist, but then he settled down after about a thirty second struggle, and they say he wasn't able to fully pull the handles down and shut off the engines and if he had then like it would have been bad, not good situation. So he then peacefully walked to the back of the plane and he was seated in the back and he told the flight attendant, you need to cuff me right now or it's going to be bad, and then they put him in a pair of cuffs. The plane made an emergency landing in Portland International Airport and he was placed under arrest, and he said that he was having a nervous breakdown, hadn't slept for forty hours, felt dehydrated and tired, and then he admitted to pulling the handles and said he did it just because he thought he was dreaming and he just wanted to wake up, and then admitted to taking the magic mushrooms forty eight hours before the incident, and told police he'd been struggling with depression for six months and that he had recently lost a friend. And I don't know, I feel like this one is tough because obviously he put everyone in a really unsafe situation where it could have gone really, really bad. Luckily it didn't end up going bad, but it could have potentially been really crazy, and it could have resulted in like a crack ton of people losing their life or being severely injured from plane crash like that is traumatizing. Flying is traumatizing enough for me, and then thinking about stuff like that happening, Like if you're going to be experimenting with the psychedelic drugs, like just stay home and do it. Don't do it when you're like going to potentially be maybe like going to work or going somewhere where you're gonna be around people, Like do it while you're either by yourself or you know, like what's gonna happen, Like I don't even know. I don't even know. Like it's a psychedelic drug. It's gonna f you up. So just don't fly and do psychedelic mushrooms. Please. Bad things are gonna happen. You're gonna react in a weird way. So it's just crazy. I will keep you guys updated on this one because this one is pretty crazy and the things that he's facing it's pretty severe. Now, if this is a guy that has never had anything in his past, people can vouch for him. I feel like, depending on the circumstances, he might get a lesser of a sentence. But it's gonna be interesting to see how this one unfolds. Last thing I want to talk about real quick. It is still developing is the guy that is the main shooter that occurred last night. They are still looking for him. His name is Robert card and he killed many many people and injured many many more. He was a firearms instructor and a member of the Army Reserves, and he served as a Sergeant first class as a petroleum supply specialist. And essentially, Wednesday night, he just walked into a bowling alley in Maine and just started shooting for no freaking reason at all other than to shoot people. And it'll never make sense to me. I know mental health is a thing. I understand mental health is a thing, but it will never make sense to me. How you just wake up one day and that's the thing that you decide that you're going to do with your life. And he also, I guess there was a note that they said that they had found. And I've also heard that his family has come out and said that he ucinated. People were talking about him at the bowling alley, which again, like I don't really know the circumstances of like his mental health and everything that was going on in his life. I think I heard he had been like in a mental health facility. I don't know. I don't know what's going on here. There's really no way to justify any type of this kind of violence, just random violence on innocent people who are just at a bowling alley like that could be any single one of us, just in a bowling alley on a Wednesday night. I don't know. They are still looking for him as of I'm recording this Thursday at almost five o'clock, and they're still searching for him. More likely than not, they're probably going to find him no longer living, taking his own life. But they could apprehend him successfully, and I hope that that's the case, so that way he can pay for what he did. It's sad, it's tragic, and the people of Maine I know, are just railing from this, and things like this should just never happen. So we can only hope and pray that he is caught and no one else is injured along the way. So with all of that, we are going to go ahead and lead into today's episode. All right, guys, jumping in today to a new case, one that I had on my list, and I went to look at it, and I had the biggest deja vu ever when I started researching it because it was a case that was covered on Unsolved Mysteries, and the way I got deja vu when a certain part of the story was talked about, it just like sent me right back. So today we're going to be talking about the abduction possibly murder of a woman named Angela Marie Hammond that happened in Clinton, Missouri in nineteen ninety one. So as always, we're going to talk about who Angela was, what led up to her going missing, and kind of where the case has been ever since, because again, as in all of the cases I cover, for the most part, they are unsolved. So Angela Marie Hammond was born February ninth of nineteen seventy one. She was very popular, well liked, and very very outgoing. Her friends and family called her Angie, and she was a recent graduate of Montrose High School in Missouri and was newly engaged to a man named Rob Shaeffer. He also goes by Robbie, so I'll interchangeably call him Rob or Robbie, and Rob was around the same age as Angie and was the star athlete at his high school and at the time of Angie's disapparent she was also four months pregnant. So this was your typical couple, fresh out of high school, met fell in love, going to get married, have a baby, have their own little family. So on April fourth of nineteen ninety one, Rob and Angie had attended a barbecue that was at Angie's mother's house, and then Angie had dropped Rob back off at his parents' home because he was set to babysit his little brother while his parents had gone out for the evening. So Angie dropped Rob off around ten o'clock and then said that he had planned on meeting her back in town when his parents returned home, and said that Angie had planned on calling him later that night. Now, this is nineteen ninety one. Cell phones do not exist. The only real way to get in touch with somebody is either to call them from a home landline or to use a payphone, and that's what Angie did. So about an hour after she dropped Rob off, she called him from a payphone which was in town and it was only about seven blocks away from where Rob's house was. So she is on the phone with Rob. There is another payphone that is next to her, and I'm going to try really hard to find a Google street View image of this area. The payphones are obviously not going to be there anymore, but just so we can kind of get an idea. Again, I say, I'm a visual person. I need to see it so I can visualize the situation. So she is on one of the payphones and she notices that this pickup truck is kind of circling, and she took notice of this enough to mention it to Rob during the conversation that she was having with him. And then she said that it was a older model green for a pickup, so she really wasn't too concerned about it. She just saw that it had been circling a little bit. And then the person parked got out and then came up and started to try to use the payphone that was next to Angie. So he used the phone next to her, ended up getting back in his truck was looking at something with the flashlight and said that it looked like he was looking for something. Angie is describing all of this to Rob as she's on the phone with him. At least this is what Rob is saying. And Rob had asked Angie, well, do you think maybe like his payphone isn't working and he needs to use yours. So Rob asked her to ask him that, ask him if he needs to use your phone. So she does and he said no, and that he said he was going to try again in another minute. And then Angie and Rob went not to talk about other things, didn't really think much of it. And then according to Rob, he heard Angie's scream and he knew immediately that he needed to get over to where that pain phone was to find out what had happened to Angie. So immediately Rob dropped his phone, didn't even hang it up, just dropped it and headed that way. And he is heading in the area in the direction towards where the payphone was, and a truck sped past him. And as this truck is speeding past him, he sees and hears someone yelling out the window of Robbie. Obviously it was Angie yelling for Robbie. So immediately Rob put his truck in reverse or his car in reverse, and went to chase after the truck. But again, this is back in the day nineteen ninety one. Cars aren't made like they're made now, and when he put his car in reverse, it ended up damaging the transmission, and he ended up only being able to chase the truck for about two miles before the transmission failed. And he said the last time he saw the truck that Angie was in, it had taken a hard rite and all he ended up being able to see after that was tail lights and dust, and Angie was gone. So the driver is described as a filthy bearded man, and this description is from Angie herself, at least according to Rob. This is what Rob says Angie said to him while they were on the phone together. So it was a older model nineteen sixties nineteen seventies green for a pickup, and it had a fish decal on their rear window and it takes up the entire back part of the window. It's just like a water scene and there's fish on it. And then that is the deja vou moment I had when I saw that. It immediately sent chills down my spot because I remember this from the Unsolved Mysteries episode and it just gaveed me out, like it's got to be one of the most identifiable features of a vehicle out there to have this decal on the window. So the man is described as being filthy and bearded. He is a white man. He has overalls and he's wearing a baseball hat and the beard on this man is very gross, dirty, disheveled, just really unkept looking. And Rob also hears the man say when Angela screams, and then we assume she's abducted, He commented the man, I didn't need to use the phone anyway. Again, this is all Rob's account of what happened. So that is the story, and this is all happening between the hours of like eleven, eleven thirty and midnight. So finally around midnight, Rob makes it to the police station and he is reporting the events as to what happened, and the investigators initially do not believe anything that Rob is saying and think that it's a story that's just pretty much right out of a movie. And they do start to kind of change the way that they're thinking when they discover that Rob's car is exactly where he said it would be and it's damage. There's damage to the transmission. How else would this damage to the transmission have happened if this isn't the story, that is what happened. They immediately start to search the area and there is authorities volunteers who are searching the area. More than one hundred and fifty volunteers are searching in both Henry and Clinton Counties, which is around the area where Angie went missing. And they start to question people people that are close to Angie. They of course question Rob, they question a former boyfriend of hers who is named Bill Barker, and they are both given light detector tests. However, we never really got the results of the light detector tests, if they were found to be deceiving or they were found to be telling the truth. There's really no report on those either way, so we don't know. But authorities are pretty hopeful because they have this description of this pickup truck, which is a pretty specific description, and there's not a whole lot of people out there who are going to have that back window that is set to the scene of water with fish on it. It's just very out of the ordinary to see something like that. And at this point, the police decide to put out a request for the public's help and talking to people that are landowners or have properties such as cabins, barns, or any other structures, telling them this girl has been kidnapped, she is missing. Check your different properties she could have been put there, especially if it's something that is easily accessible to somebody that's just kind of out on a piece of property and people aren't there all the time. Check those things and see if she might be there. So different theories that have come up over the years is that it could have been a case that was connected to a few of the other missing persons cases in the area. In January of nineteen ninety one, there was a woman named Trudy Darby who was working at a K and D convenience store around ten o'clock in the evening and she had noticed two men outside who were acting strange. She immediately calls her son and he comes up to the store, arriving about ten minutes late later. But at this point Trudy is gone, and her coat and purse are found inside, and there's two hundred dollars missing from the register. So obviously a robbery type of situation came up at that place, which really wasn't too too far from the area that Angie was taken from. And then two days after Trudy went missing, the police are searching for her and they find her nude body along the river bank and they find blood, hair, and a thirty eight caliber shellcasing near the river, and an autopsy is completed and evidence would show that she had been sexual assaulted, she had been robbed and ultimately shot twice in the head before these people had dumped her body. And then in February of nineteen ninety one, there is another Missouri woman named Cheryl Kinney who goes missing. She had clocked out of work and she would typically clock out about midnight, but this evening, she had clocked out around ten o'clock in the evening, and by ten seventeen she had set the alarm for the store that she had worked at, never arrived home, and is never heard from again. And they later find her white chevl in an abandoned store parking lot. And from what I have seen and found, her body has never been recovered. So her case is still open as far as I know, and I am going to add her to my list of people to cover a case on because every life is important and everyone deserves justice, So we're going to add Cheryl Kenney to the list. The case of Trudy does end up being solved and they arrested twenty year old Jesse Rush and his thirty four year old half brother, Marvin Cheney. They are arrested and charged with the murder of Trudy Darby. And why they did it was robbery. The motive I do not know because I haven't dug into that case, but actual trash for doing that, and I feel like they're all very similar all around ten o'clock in the evening, they definitely could all be connected. So since nineteen ninety one, from nineteen ninety one to two thousand and two, twenty one, this case is very, very cold, and there's really not a whole lot of evidence out there. There's not a whole lot out there. There has been a lot of speculation against Rob because really his story is the only thing that the police have to go on, and they came out, you know, many a time saying like he could be making this all up. Now, I will say Angie's mom, who is named Marcia, she never for once thought that Rob was involved ever, ever, ever, and always felt really bad about everything that happened because she said Rob very much blamed himself and you know, had promised Angie that he was going to be there to take care of her and he thinks that he could have done more to save her, but he ended up not being able to save her, so he blames himself, although Angie's mom said, I do not blame him, but he thinks that everyone else thinks that he is to blame for it. Rob was quickly cleared of any wrongdoing or involvement, and for the most part, I feel like people did rally around him and believe his story. It is one of those kind of stories. It kind of reminded me of the Carla Walker case, where it's almost just so unbelievable that it almost is believable, because who was going to make something like that up, especially back in those days. It's very uncommon, more uncommon back then than it is now for something like that to happen, and especially for someone who's like nineteen twenty years old to make up a big, convoluted story to cover their tracks. It just doesn't really make sense. So in twenty twenty one, it was actually April of twenty twenty one, it was a thirtieth anniversary of Angie's abduction and disappearance. There was some new information that was made and it was a theory that suggested that it could have been a case of mistaken identity, and Angela was abducted being mistaken for this other woman who was also named Angela, who was being targeted because of her father's legal affairs. So this man, who also had a daughter named Angela who lived in that area of Missouri, had been a informant for a narcotics case and had received a threat against his daughter's life. And the note was sent on April fourth of nineteen ninety one, which is the same night that Angie ended up being abducted. And they both had similar appearances, Angela and Angie. They looked similar, and they think that it might have been a case of mistaken identity. And the letter that was sent was one of those kind of letters that creepers will send where they don't want to be identified, so they cut out the different letters from a magazine to make the letter, and it basically says, and I'm going to post it hello no, and then it's blacked out, redacted. We know who you are, no Blank. People like you deserve what you get. We know where your foxy daughter is at. She will see us soon well blank. She has our deepest sympathy in her future loss. Goodbye, and then it's blacked out. It's creepy, it's weird, and it's obviously that someone like sat down and got a got like magazines and like cut all these letters out like it's some creepy shit. It really is, So that very well could have been the case. But I don't really understand this random, like bearded creeper of a man being able to track down Angie at a pay phone, Like that part really doesn't make sense to me, But I do do you feel like there is a correlation there. There has to be a correlation, and this person that was the informant was basically stopping this big illegal drug operation and it definitely could have been a situation where someone was mad about that because that is their livelihood and that is how they make their money, is the drug running ring, and they are mad because that's being shut down by this person. So they're going to target someone in that person's family, who is a girl named Angela, not at all related to Angie Hammond. So police are still looking for information in regards to this. They think that that letter is a big part of it, and they feel like there's someone out there who has information about this, and they also think that they could possibly potentially solve this crime from new information that came out in twenty twenty one. But again, it's one of those cases where until the person that is responsible or knows who is responsible for this, decides to fess up and tell what they know, we are forever going to be in a holding pattern of not knowing what happened to Angie. Angie's body was never found, so there's no way to even know if Angie was in fact murdered, even though I think everything points to her being murdered, but there was nothing ever found to coaborate that, so we really don't know. Angie is still missing, and we don't know the faith that she met, although I don't think it sounds good. So I am going to play now a clip from Unsolved Mysteries because it gives me all of the vintage vibes when I play Unsolved Mysteries clips on this podcast, and we're gonna listen to the clip, and then we're going to wrap it all up. Sad Clinton, Missouri, population nine thousand, is an idyllic farming community in the heart of small town America, a type of place where everyone knows each other and feels insulated from big city crime, but today a cloud of uncertainty hovers over Clinton. A popular young woman has been abducted and quite possibly murdered. Angela Hammond was an active, outgoing twenty year olds known to everyone as Angie. Her family had lived in Clinton for three generations. Her fiance, Rob Schaeffer, was a star athlete in high school who looked forward to a career in the military. In January of nineteen ninety one, Rob gave Angie a diamond ring and promised that he would always take care of her. I had a great time tonight. I'm gonna go see Kayla now, so I'll give you a call. It April fourth, nineteen ninety one, at around ten pm, Angie dropped Rob off at his house after a barbecue. She promised that she would fold him a few hours later. That was about ten o'clock. I was going to meet her back uptown as soon as my mom got home. I was watching my little brother at the time, and she called later on that night, Hello, Hi, Rob, it's Angie. Hi. At eleven fifteen, Angie called Rob from a pay for in the center of town, approximately seven blocks from his house. Square were talking on the phones. She mentioned to me about a truck circling around the block, an older model green Ford pickup truck. Truck I keeps circling around the block. Do you reckonize a truck? No, he's probably not from around here. Maybe he's just lost, I guess. So anyway, want to go to a lake? And he remained unconcerned until the truck parked next to the phone booth. H Rob, he's pulling up next to phones. What's the driver looking. He's kind of dirty looking. He's got a must ask beard and glasses and he's wearing overalls and he's coming to the phone. The truck is a late model green pickup truck with one of those cows that cover the whole back window. It looks looks like a leg scene with a fish jumping out of water. What's he doing now, Angie? He used the phone next to her, got back in his truck and looked at something with a flashlights. He described the flashlights to me a phone. He was looking for something. I had her turn around and ask him if he needed his phone. Maybe the other phone was broke, and he said, no, you're just gonna try again in a minute. No, maybe I should come down there. Oh Rob, no, I'm sure it's okay. So we talked about other things. We were story about it, and that's when I heard to spring on the phone writer screaming. The only thing that went to my mind is getting up there and find out what the hell's going on. I ran out of the house, just dropped the phone out and hang the phone back up and just had it out there. I saw a pickup truck going past me, and then somebody yelled up the window, Robbie. That's how I knew it was there. Rob pursued the pickup spread through the downtown business district. He had no idea when he threw his car into reverse. He had severely damage of the transmission. Well, the pickup made a sharp, bright turn. Rob's car finally gave up. I chased him about two miles. The transmission failed it it started dying. As I was making my turn to the right. This guy turned off the right. All I saw his brake, lights and dust. Well, I blamed himself for it because he always told her he'd be there to take care of her, and he tried. He did everything that could be done. You know, nobody blames him but I think he thinks that people blame him. The beginning is the hardest because you know you were close enough to get them, well, she just didn't get the job done. And you still wake up at nice and wondering where she's at, wondering what happened, wondered if anybody's still looking, just wonder all the time. The news of Angie's disappearance sent shock waves through Clinton. The police and hundreds of citizens launched an extensive air and land search, but there was no sign of Angela Hammond or abductor or the pickup truck. We had some assistants from the Missouri State High of Patrol that did a computer seercheon on all rest her vehicles with make in then approximate year. To their help, and we had like sixteen hundred possibilities that we had to look after checking wherever these trucks are at on as far as color and if they had any mural in the back window, with no success. The police based their investigation on Rob Shaeffer's testimony, but when no witnesses could be found to corroborate his statement, Rob became a suspect himself. I think you know it was natural that people wondered, you know, did the boyfriend do it type thing? But my feeling, I've known the kid all his life and I never doubted for a minute that he had anything to do with it. Within a week, Rob Shaeffer was cleared of any involvement Nanjie's disappearance. Two days later, the police connected the abduction in Clinton to two other unsolved cases within a one hundred mile radius. The first occurred here max Creek, Missouri, on January nineteenth, nineteen ninety one. Close up, but there's a man that's been hanging around outside for a while now, and I'm really forty two year old Trudy Derby was working alone in a convenience store around ten pm. She called her son to report a suspicious man lurking outside. Less than ten minutes later, Trudy's son arrived at the store and found it completely deserted. Two days later, the body of Trudy Derby was found on a riverbank ten miles from the store. She had been shot twice in the head. Then, on February twenty eighth, thirty year old Sheryl Anne Kenny was reported missing in the Veda, Missouri. Seventy miles from max Creek. She vanished shortly after closing up the convenience store where she worked that night. Cheryl's car was found in the store parking lot. She has not been seen since less than one month later. Angela Hammond would be abducted angels found provide they are related to, for example, Trudy Derby, or if Cheryl's found, maybe that'd be a connection to Trudy Derby. How she was murdered. Authorities now for you that a serial killer maybe on the loos west central Missouri, even though they hold out little hope that either Chrylynne Kenny or Angela Hammond are still alive. There have been unconfirmed sightings of Angela in several states and most recently Canada. If anybody out there sees anything, you know, if they could put themselves in our place and know how we feel, you know how heart wrenching it is that she was taken. Even if the guy that took her sees this, if he would just call and let him know what he did with her. There's one final chilling detail the abduction of Angela Hammond. After she screamed into the phone, Rob Schaeffer heard another person speak most likely her abductor. All he said was I didn't need to use the phone anyway before she disappeared, and she described the suspect as a filthy, bearded man who wore glasses and was dressed in overalls. The suspect was driving a late nineteen sixties early nineteen seventies two toned green Ford pickup truck. The back window was completely covered by an opaque decal of a fish jumping out of water, which may look like this the way that I still to this day get the biggest chow bumps when I listen to unsolved mystery stories. I don't know what it is. I don't know if it's the creepy music. I don't know if it's the unsolved aspect of it. I don't know if it's Robert Stack's voice, but the I just get the biggest chills when I watch these stories. Even watching this one again, it took me right back to when I watched it when I was a little child, Like it is insane. So that is the story of Angie, And unfortunately there's not a whole lot of new developments in the case since that story aired, But I wanted to share her story I wanted to share the Unsolved Mysteries clip for a little bit of nostalgia because it makes me happy, and I hope that we can get the episode to the person that is going to help solve Angie's case. And I feel so bad for Rob. Watching him in that interview just really made me sad that he had to go through this and has lived more of his life without Angie than he lived with Angie. It is really sad. So I'm also going to post. I'm gonna post a lot. I'm going to try to find the area that she went missing from. I'm gonna post the sketch of the suspect, which the sketch to me is weird because it doesn't even have a beard on the man, and she described him as a bearded man. I don't know who did the sketch, but I'm going to post that. I'm going to post the truck picture, the decal picture, and also a photos of Angie of course, and age progressed photo of Angie as well to what she would look like if she was older. So that is the story. It is such a full circle moment for me because Unsolved Mysteries was my jam where it started for me, the original true crime show that I was raised on. I don't remember life without Unsolved Misty, so it is crazy and wild that I am covering some of the same stories that they once covered way back in the day when I was just a kid.
