Let's talk right now in true crime, and then together we are going to work on warming up some cold cases. Let's go. Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of Primetime Crime. It's Kylie. We are going to go ahead and get into right now and true crime. First thing is up is Corey Richins has officially pled not guilty in the poisoning death of her husband, Eric Richards in Utah. She is going to be on trial for allegedly poisoning her husband with fentanyl and then writing a children's book about grief and her husband's death and all the things. So it's going to be so interesting to see how this one plays out, because I do feel like prosecute has quite the case against Corey. It seems like they have other instances where they believe that she. Attempted to poison him. So I'm sure all of that is going to come in in the trial, and I will be sure to keep you guys updated on that. Okay, there was a missing gal that she went missing from Austin. Her name is Brenda Swindle and she is the daughter of a former MLB player and he had posted on social media that his daughter was missing. She was a mom, and she was believed to be with her ex boyfriend who was allegedly abusive at different points of their relationship. So there was this massive manhunt trying to find her because everyone thought that she potentially could be in danger and that she didn't go on her own free will. So there was a BOLO out and a description of the car, the license plate they were spotted or the car was spotted in Colorado than in Idaho, and then they ended up being found in Oregon and they were found safe and apparently she was on the journey willingly. I don't know. I'm sure there's going to be more details, maybe that'll come out, but regardless, she is safe. That is really all that matters. The boyfriend ex boyfriend had left a really weird note for his dad and it basically said, going to travel the world, see you on the other side, Love Brenna and Morgan. So that was a little eerie, kind of weird, so I can understand why the family was worried because he had been abusive to her in the past and then she went off no communication with her family, no communication with her kids, which is very unlike her. But we really don't know what was going on behind closed doors in this situation. All I know is she is safe. He did end up having some warrants out for some of the domestic violence situations that had happened previously, so the last I had heard, he was arrested. So if anything more comes out, I will be sure to share it. So I don't know if any of you are following this Wade Wilson murderer guy that has like the tattooed face where he looks like the Joker. So he was officially sentenced to death this week, and he I don't even know. He is tied to like this white supremacist gang. He killed a thirty five year old woman named Christine Melton and then he killed a forty three year old woman named Diane Ruiz in Florida, kind of back to back. It was really bizarre. The way that he committed his crimes. And he is just a statistic crazy person. I don't even know. I definitely think that if he was out of prison, he would be a serial killer. He would go on to kill again, again and again. He would go on to sexual assault woman. He is a horrendous human and him not a major proponent of the death penalty, but I think in his situation, he's going to be in prison for the rest of his life, and he is really sadistic. If you watch him in court, the way he moves and the way he his mannerisms, it is so eerie, and the faced hats really don't help either. They make it even creepier. He actually terrifies me. They do say that he does have different psychiatric disorders and that he is chronically and severely mentally ill, and I think that very much comes across in his demeanor and the way he acts. I don't think he was always. Like this, but something came out in him at some point in time and he has one hundred percent become that person. So investigators have officially released a cause of death for thirteen year old Madeline Soto. So her mother's boyfriend is accused of molesting her and then killing her. His name is Steven Sterr and he was charged with murder after she disappeared. On her way to school. She was only thirteen years old. There was a lot of creepy stuff going on in that household between Madeleine and this boyfriend. I don't know the circumstances regarding what the mother knew, but I think that she probably knew more than has been put out into the media allegedly. In my opinion, this also happened in Florida. All the weird shit always happens in Florida. So they officially have released the cause of death two of Madeline as strangulation. Steven Stearns is a all around horrible human and he has so much charges of sexual battery, possession of child sexual abuse, material images upon images upon images, awful child pornography, all of this stuff, and everyone kind of was loo looking at him. The public was looking at him as a suspect when Madeleine disappeared, because he was such a weirdo, and he wasn't initially looked at as a suspect. But of course they have been able to. Officially bring enough evidence forward that they think that he is the one who is responsible for this and some of these abuse claims of Stephen abusing Madeleine. Go back to twenty twenty two and when Madeleine was only eleven years old. So this is a human that was horrendously and horrifically abusing a child for at least two years and then eventually ended up killing her because he is such a six statistic human in my opinion, allegedly that that wasn't enough for him. Iw I cannot even imagine. I cannot imagine. He is horrible. We do not like him, and I will be. Sure to bring you any updates because he is going hopefully to be in prison for the rest of his life. Okay, last thing I want to talk about. I don't know if you guys have followed the Robert Tellis trial, but when I tell you, it is so interesting to watch him and his testimony. If you aren't familiar, go back and watch his testimony because you will just shake your head the entire time. So Robert Tellis is forty seven years old. He is a former Clark County public administrator in Las Vegas, and he was accused and on trial for the twenty twenty two stabbing death of a man named Jeffrey German, who was a Las Vegas Review Journal reporter. So Jeff was a very tell it like it is, speak the truth kind of reporter, and he did a lot of pieces highlighting Roberts indiscretions, not being a good human, his infidelities, all of that. He aired all of that, so that, of course, according to the prosecution, was motive for murder. Now, there was all kinds of evidence, video evidence, DNA evidence, all the evidence that pointed to Robert being the one who killed Jeff. But Robert is very. Delusional and in his own head, he basically was spinning that this was all a conspiracy against him and he was set up, and it was insane. Listening to his testimony really made me wonder what the heck is going on in this world. And the fact that the jury was out for a way longer time than I ever thought they were going to be out because this to me, I know, I never I always say that there's never such a thing as a slam dunk. This one seemed like a slam dunk to me. But that jury got to give him credit. They went through each piece of the evidence. They did have couple of questions that they had brought up during their deliberation. So they did it. They did it fair, they did it just. And they did find him guilty of the murder of Jeff German and they sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole in twenty years. So he's going away for a long long time and hopefully we'll not be able to hurt anyone else. So that is it for right now in True Crime. We are going to go ahead and get started. With today's episode. Okay, guys, today we are diving into a brand new unsolved case. This one seriously needs our attention. Today we are going to be talking about the unsolved alleged homicide of a girl named Ashland Bowman out of Edgewater, Florida. Ashland went missing and sadly, her remains were found a few weeks later and her case was very very quickly closed. But her family and those that support the family are positive that there was foul play involved. And once I started looking into this case, I agree that there is a lot more to this than it meets the eye. Ashland's family and supporters are super determined to get this case reopened and getting her story out there is definitely going to help propel it forward. There is a guy a. Family friend named Devin Shaw who decided to take it upon himself to take Ashlin's story to TikTok and that in the last month, It's wild has helped this story gain so much traction. And I think that is exactly why I'm bringing you the story today, because I happened upon it on one of my true crime groups on Facebook and decided to dig in. And then once I started digging in, I was like, Holy Molly, why isn't anyone in. Jail for Ashland's murder? This is horrific. So shout out to Devin Shaw for doing the work and putting it out there and helping get this case seen and heard by those that need to see and hear it. Ashland was killed in twenty sixteen, and once you kind of hear the story the way it goes, you're going to really see that it's evident what happened to her, and the people that were involved have basically gotten away with homicide and have continued to go on to live their lives in and out of prison like a revolving door. And not only have those people gotten away with Ashland's death, but the law enforcement officers who investigated this have refused to hold these people accountable, and they're also at fault for not doing their job and investigating this at its fullest capacity and literally seeing the writing on the wall, what's right in front of them. And honestly, if this could happen to Ashland, it could happen to anybody. So we're going to go ahead and lead into Ashland's episode, and I'm going to tell you all about Ashland, and then we're going to get to, unfortunately, how her life ended. Ashland Bowman was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, July eighth of nineteen eighty eight, to her parents, Harold and Carrie Bowman. Ashland was only seventeen at the time of her disappearance and death and a senior in high school. She was a third degree black belt. She enjoyed skateboarding, fishing, spending time with her friends, and she really loved to travel with her grandparents. I decided to do a little more research on Ashland and I found that she had a Facebook page, and in looking at her Facebook page, I discovered that she was a huge Justin Bieber fan, which she is a girl after my own heart, because I also loved Justin Bieber still to this day. So Ashland very much had struggled a bit during her teenage years. She had unfortunately became involved in drugs and there was a point in time that she was at a facility called store Marchman Behavioral health Care, and this was about a year before she disappeared, so this was in twenty fifteen. She ended up running away from this facility and they did consider her missing for a short period of time, but she ended up returning two hours later. So Ashland's grandparents received temporary custody of her in twenty fourteen, and prior to this, she was living with her mom at the time, and her grandmother, Pauline, had filed for temporary custody thinking that it was in the best interest of Ashland. And at the time of Ashland's disappearance in twenty sixteen, she was staying with her grandparents in Edgewater, Florida. In twenty fourteen. December of twenty fourteen, Ashland posted on Facebook that she very much wanted to change her life, turn her life around. She said that she wants to accomplish all of her dreams. She said she wants to finish high school and go to college. And I want to be able to have a stable job with problems. So she very much yearned to turn her life around to be better, to do better. She was very young, and unfortunately addiction is a disease, but Ashland very much did express the need and the want to get better. So I am now going to tell you about what initiated Ashlin going missing in the first place. So it was June nineteenth of twenty sixteen, and according to Ashlan's grandmother Pauline, Ashlin had left home that day she was picked up by somebody around six pm. Ashland had plans to go visit her dad, Harold in New Smyrna Beach and June nineteenth of twenty sixteen was Father's Day, so all of that made sense and linked up. However, Ashland never made it to visit her dad. She for whatever reason, ended up at a friend's home instead. Ashland did reach out to Pauline on that Monday, and Ashland had asked her if it was okay if she's at a friend's home. And then the next day, which was Tuesday, Ashland was seen running near a park called Rotari Park and she was alone, and it was around eight thirty in the morning. Pauline then said that she had spoken with Ashland on June twenty second, but after that she didn't hear from Ashland again. So Ashland was allegedly staying at a home that was on Edgewater Canal Road, which was near Rotari Park, and she had told her grandmother that she was staying at this home with several people. So the timeline on this I found a couple of different articles that kind of contradicted each other, so I'm just going to cover all my bases here. On June twenty first or June twenty second, a suspicious person call came in from Rotary Park. A woman had called police and said that there was a woman who had walked from Rotary Park onto her property and she went ahead and told the girl that she was trying passing. And then this girl started acting erratic and went on to swing a garden log at this homeowner. But she never really spoke, she never said anything, so she ended up calling the cops. The cops came out to investigate the girl at that point in time was gone, but they did find Ashland's backpack that contained some clothes. According to cell phone records, the last cell phone activity on Ashlon's cell phone was on June twenty second, at one thirty six pm. Ashland officially ended up being. Reported missing on June twenty fourth, when her family was not able to get a hold of her. And this lady that initially had called law enforcement to report this person trespassing on her property did come forward once Ashland was listed as a missing person and said, yes, this is the girl that I saw that morning who was being aggressive and was trespassing on my property. So it's obvious kind of the outside looking in that there was something wrong with Ashland that morning, whether she was on. Some type of substance, something was going on. But where do the people that she was staying with come into play in all of this, because there's definitely something not right about this scenario. So, like I said, a missing person's was filed for Ashland on June twenty fourth, but then everything just kind of stopped. Everything. Essentially, the trail went cold and there was no sign about where Ashland could be, where she was, her cell phone was no longer pinging, so her family struggled for almost two months to try to figure out where Ashland was and try to reconcile what had happened in their lives. And then on August ninth, surveyors who were clearing land at an industrial park near Pullman Road found remains in a wooded area. The nine one one caller when he called to report the remains, said that they were decayed, really really bad. Now, these remains were only found about two blocks from where Ashland was last seen and where Ashland was staying, So at this time, of course there's a missing girl in the area, and then these remains are found. Ashland's family ended up being told that her remains had officially been found, but then a week later, law enforcement and the investigators came forward and said that the body had not been identified because it was unrecognizable, even to the point where dental records could not be used to confirm the victim's identity. They also went on to say that because the remains were so badly decomposed that they couldn't even tell the gender of the victim. Which is just horrific and horrible. Edgewater investigator said that they were going to send the remains to the University of Florida so that anthropologists could help determine the identity so at this point in time, Ashland's family thinks that her remains have been found, and then they're told, never mind, we can't confirm or deny that these are Ashland's remains, and we're going to send them to the University of Florida to try to identify them. So in September, shortly after they brought the remains to the University of Florida, a statement was issued by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement that the remains were in fact those of Ashland. There were a. Ton of rumors online due to the public being informed that the remains were unrecognizable, so rumors were starting to squirrel that the body had been badly burned and was mutilated. But investigators came forward and said that's not true, and they were very much trying to put any of those rumors to rest. But it really doesn't make sense to me that they said that these remains are so badly decomposed that we can't tell who the person is. We can't use dental records. It's obvious that whatever happened to this person was traumatic and it wasn't of natural causes, So it makes sense that rumors were kind of swirling, because if you say that something is unrecognizable, your head kind of goes to like that they have been burned or something more nefarious is going on here than just remains being found in the woods. So the Medical Examiner's office gets the remains, and oddly enough, they didn't identify any trauma to Ashland prior to her death, So the medical examiner ended up making a ruling as the cause of death being undetermined. Now because the condition of the body was so poor and the toxicology report was inconclusive, they ended up basically saying right then and there that they're going to suspend the case until new information comes to light, which I think it's horrible that, first of all, you say that the remains that were found were so badly decayed decomposition and we couldn't identify them right off the bat, But there's no cause to think that any harm came to this person before they ended up passing away. It just does not make any sense. So investigators police did interview those that were last known to have seen Ashland, and they of course said that she was under the influence of drugs when they last saw her. Because I think my opinion they're very much trying to paint a picture of well, this was just an unfortunate accident. She was on drugs and then this happened, and this happened. I really don't know how many people were inside of this home where Ashland was staying. I know there's at least four, there might even be more people. They ended up giving two of these people a voice analysis test that of course is known to show deception in people's voices, and both of them passed that, allegedly with flying colors, and. They showed no sign of deception. And I don't know if I entirely believe that, but that was in one of the articles that I read. So a forensic report from the Human Identification Laboratory at the University of Florida said that with Ashland's remains, there was a cranial fracture that could have been the result of trauma at or near the time of death, but they also said it could. Have been a result of natural decay. But they did say that there was no other trauma noted on the remainder of Ashland's body. But one thing that I think is very interesting, and I think that this is a really important talking point is that along with Ashland's remains, when they do the autopsy and all, they discovered that her highway bone was missing. Now, this bone is often damaged as a result of strangulation, and you would be able to see that if somebody was strangled, that bone would be severely damaged and you would be able to see that there were signs of trauma. But this bone was completely missing, which doesn't really add up for me. I don't really know. But of course because it was missing, they weren't able to exclude that there was trauma to that area. So this wasn't able to be excluded as a cause of her death. So Ashland's grandmother, Pauline, had said in different interviews that Ashland was susceptible to blackouts because there were times that she didn't eat properly and she would pass out. And when she was younger, she had also been diagnosed with a hole in her heart, but this wasn't something that really had given her trouble in life, and they assumed that the hole had closed up. Because of course law enforcement is trying to figure out, well, this girl obviously just died of natural causes or she overdosed. We're not going to look. At any potential suspicious behavior by anybody that she was hanging out with. We think that she probably just unfortunately passed away in of natural causes, and the medical examiner and their determination of the undetermined cause of death kind of supports this. So of course, interviewing her family trying to figure out if she had health issues, that kind of leads them to the point where they decide that they're not going to continue on with an investigation into what happened to Ashland. So law enforcement had said that the case was basically. Suspended for the time being, but Pauline, who is Ashton's grandmother, said that she was under the impression that the case was closed and they weren't going to investigate anything any further. So law enforcement very much gave the family the impression that there wasn't any foul play, so there wasn't really anything for them to investigate, which doesn't make any sense to me when you hear about the condition of the body. Ashland's mother an interview shortly after they made this ruling about the case being suspended or closed, and she said that she was heartbroken that her daughter's case is being suspended, but she did credit the police for doing what they could, and she said that they were in the process of doing their forensics, and she said, it is what it is, and unfortunately it's going to be an unsolved case. Do I like it? No, not by any stretch of the imagination. So who was involved in this story? Who was Ashlin last with? Whose house was she at? These are all questions that everyone has. So investigators did give a particular name to the family, and this was a name of a guy. I'm not going to say the name. It is very public knowledge. You can easily find it. But because this is an ongoing investigation, I don't want to hurt the integrity of the case by naming this person publicly, but it is public record, it is out there. So this person was twenty one years old, a male, and this is one of the people that she was staying in the house with. And this is the person who primarily lived in the home. So the home, like I said, was on Edgewater Canal Road, and this home was owned from what I can tell, by this guy's mother. So it was obviously a younger guy. His mom owned the house and he was living there. I'm not sure if the mom was living there. I'm not sure of the circumstances. But this guy, boy. Twenty one years old, was already well known to police. So in August of twenty sixteen, so this is shortly after Ashland goes missing, investigators ended up being called to this house and they find a missing juvenile hiding under a pile of laundry. And that's not it, but wait, there's more. They also find a meth lab in this home. So several people in the home ended up being arrested, including this twenty one year old guy, and he ended up being charged with trafficking in meth and was scheduled for court in later August twenty sixteen. So this individual has a wrap sheet that is longer than my arm. Starting from the time he was eighteen up until very very recent there is a lot of arrests, there's a lot of charges, there's a lot going on. It's obvious that this person and some of the other people that were in this home are very very heavy into meth and drugs and selling it, and holy moly, it just really brings home how bad of a crowd this was that Ashland unfortunately found herself involved with, and in my opinion, that's what ultimately led to her death. There is also another. Gal involved that has been named. Again I'm not going to name her. She has forty five thousand Facebook pages, not even kidding, But if you go to Devin Shaw's TikTok, he tells you all about her and all of the different things. Again, we have mugshot after mugshot after mugshot after mugshot. These people are a revolving door of bad decisions and crime. And these are the people who are allegedly involved in Ashland's death and have seemingly gotten away with it. On one of the Facebook pages for this gal that allegedly was involved, she even made a comment that said, Yep, I'm a killer, rapist, violent criminal, human trafficker, drug distributor, robbery, no thefts, no fraudulent, no forged, false imprisonments, and everything else of the f and sort like this person does not need to be out and about regardless of anything like just not a good person, not a good human, probably should be locked up in my opinion, allegedly so. The other thing that Devin said in his TikTok videos about this case is that the people that were involved in any way shape or form with Ashland right before she passed away, have talked about it and have you know, they can't keep their mouth shut, so they're out there talking about how they were involved and how they seemingly got away with it and all of this other craft. And it's just insane to me that the police department isn't doing anything because they are well aware that these people are allegedly involved in this, and I don't know how We're almost we're eight years out and there have been zero arrests made in Ashland's death, and it's obvious that something nefarious was going on here. It's obvious by the way that her remains were found, the condition of her remains that law enforcement said they were so bad that they couldn't even identify if this person was male or female. So you know that something horrific had to happen to Ashlan and that absolutely just breaks my heart that that happened to her, and she was probably so scared and so traumatized by these people that she thought were her friends. So I'm going to share a little update as far as where the case is at the moment, because it's really important and it's really impressive. Let me shout out again Devin Shaw. Check him out on TikTok. He first brought this case to his TikTok in July July eighteenth, to be exact now, Like I said, Devin is a friend of the family, so he's working closely with Ashland's family to help get the word out about this case. And this is the fun power of social media. He posted his first video about Ashland in mid July, and there was a petition of course to reopen the case and kind of get the ball rolling to get justice for Ashland, because we're just sitting here waiting at this point. The people that are responsible allegedly for her death are out and about committing crime after crime after crime, getting arrested, re arrested, re arrested, re arrested, and Ashland's family is waiting for justice for their baby, for their pride and joy. And Devin announced as of July thirtieth of this year, So in less than fifteen days, the power that this story brought to the TikTok community, it branched over into Facebook and to Instagram. Everybody was signing this petition. They officially reopened the case, which is huge, huge, huge news that is the power of social media and one person not being afraid to speak up and say what's really going on and demand that something changes, and these people don't have to go on day to day to day without justice for their loved one and not knowing what really happened, and the people being held accountable that are responsible for the deaths of these people in these cold cases I talk about all the time. Ashland's death does not have to be in vain, and the people responsible need to be held accountable because they are likely to harm someone else. They've gotten away with this for eight years. They're likely to harm someone else, and we need to get them off of the streets. So such great news that her case is officially reopen and hopefully they're going to be revisiting all of these people who they previously interviewed, who were last with Ashland, and hopefully we have a real case brewing against these people. Personally, I think that they do have a case brewing against these people. It's just a matter of time. So Ashland's family officially launched a foundation in her name. It's called the Ashland Bowman Foundation, and of course their mission is to get justice for Ashland, but It says that their mission is to protect youth from the dangers of the streets and prevent teen drug addiction. Our organization is serving the local communities of Florida in honor of Ashland Bowman. To learn more about Ashland's story, please check out our social media pages. And I just really think this story it's playing out in real time, which is why I think I wanted to cover it, but even more so because it really shows you that the power of social media, it is so powerful when people actually do use it for good, and that's what we're trying to do here. We're trying to take a story that is horrific and take a family that has been broken apart by tragedy and put a spin on it where you see that not everybody in the world is bad and has bad intentions, and there are people out there that want to use their platforms. For good and to do good things. So that is what we are all about here. But I don't think Ashland's story is done here. I think her legacy is going to be in helping other families navigate when they unfortunately have someone who is a victim of a crime like Ashlan's, or having to navigate drug addiction, which is such a powerful beast in itself. And I think that the important takeaway here is that Ashland was young, she was seventeen years old, She had her whole life ahead of her, She had dreams, she had ambitions, and unfortunately, the wrong people crossed her path and they ended up doing the most inhumane thing a person can do, and that is taking someone else's life, and not only taking someone else's life, but taking someone else's life and having absolutely no repercussions for their actions. So I want Ashland to be remembered for all of the good that she did in the world, who she was as a person, and her legacy is going to be positive and hopefully we get some resolution in her case coming up here soon. I do feel like the case is going in the right direction, which for so many of the stories I cover, we kind of don't have resolution and it's just a dead end. I feel like in this case, we are going in the right direction, and that is all because of the power of social media, and I think that's a really amazing thing to see and an amazing thing to celebrate. In a world where social media. Sometimes gets such a bad rap, social media can help solve these cases and put pressure on law enforcement agencies to do the right thing and reopen a case that needs to be reopened. It never should have been closed or suspended in the first place. It's ridiculous. So that is the story of Ashland Bowman. I'm gonna keep you guys updated because I do feel like there's going to be more coming out in regards to this.
