Hey, guys, welcome back to Primetime Crime. It's Kylie. We are going to dive into right now in true crime. We have a few things to cover. First things first, we are going to talk about the discovery of the remains of a teenager that went missing in twenty twenty two, Dylan Rounds. He was nineteen years old when he went missing over a Memorial Day weekend in twenty twenty two, and they have discovered skeleton rains for him in Loose in Utah. Dylan had decided that he wanted to start his own farm, so he moved to this area in Utah so he could do that. He spoke with his family that weekend and then he literally vanished and was never heard from again. His mother has been a huge proponent of keeping his story out there and trying to solve his case. And in March of twenty twenty three, they arrested a man named James Brenner and they charged him with aggravated murder and abuse or desecration of a human body. And they were pretty sure that he did it. They just needed to figure out where he was, and this week they were able to get him to agree to some type of plea where he would show them where the remains were, and that, sure enough, is where they found the remains of Dylan. So James Brenner was a squatter on the property that was kind of close to where Dylan and had purchased his property so he could start this farm, and they had gotten into some sort of an argument shortly after he disappeared. They found some boots that belonged to Dylan and they were able to tie those back to James Brenner because it had blood along with DNA from James Brenner, and that's kind of how they tied it all together. I got to see Dylan's mom at crime Con. I want to say it was last year, and you know, hearing her story and hearing you know, everything that she's been through, it's been really hard. I can't even imagine, especially knowing that she knew that her son was no longer alive, but her whole mission was to try to find him so she could bring him home and give him the proper burial that he so very much deserves. He was just a young kid trying to go out and live his life, and this old trash bag of a human predator, James Brenner, preyed upon him and took his life for absolutely no reason. Moving in to Riley Stram News, I have a new post from Christingman, who is the family friend spokesperson. Here we go what we know today about the missing case of Riley Strain. Riley has been gone now for over a month. The latest police interview posted says not to listen to all of the social media stories. They know what happened, and they cannot tell the family the full story until the toxicology comes back. Ironically, during the police interview, he stated nothing about the eyewitness that his own detective interviewed on Monday, stating seeing Riley walk past the last known location the police have determined to be the accident scene. Also, the same person of interest that the family has been looking for several weeks now and was told by the police that he was not a person of interest in talking two weeks ago. Is this the latest person to come forward, a diversion to get people to move on from the scene, or a legit lead. Some of this is like not the best grammar. I am just reading it as it is here. Don't come for me. Only time will tell. One thing I do know about the person coming forward is that the story we were told by them Saturday evening match the same story they repeated to the detective on Monday, which seems very rare to me. The reason why is most generally, when someone is looking for attention in telling stories, they tend to change the stories when law enforcement is involved and a statement is being taken officially. This person did not change two days later. I think if I personally had info verifying this was an actual accident with eyewitness accounts or water in the body, because the family only received that info of none in the body secondhand, that makes no sense. Why not tell the family now we already know there were lots of people, including police officers, on foot in the general area, so why not share it to the family That info has nothing to do with toxcology. At this point unless it's an actual crime investigation. I'm not in law enforcement, but just my two cents, which unfortunately in today's economy, isn't worth a lot. Back to important info now, Riley's gene size would be a thirty two XL buckle jeens. His belt would be similar to the one in the picture and color in an athletic style golf belt with clasp. His iPhone under the case would be ghost gray, the Michael Core's wallet in blue, and the justin size fifteen square toe boots. These items are still missing as far as we know, unless the police have found them since Riley went missing and just haven't told the family yet. Like other important info, then I'm not gonna lie. I'm like really confused by what he's saying. In the next part, he's talking about the fraternity brothers and he says, you know, he's never given their names or posted any pictures, and he said he's done this to keep the press for or against them out of the tragic hunt and the ending to finding Riley, and then says when ask questions about them directly, we have given honest answers on what we have known as a collective group and then he said, in his personal opinion, and this is a little confusing, but I think I've kind of dissected it and figured out what he means. He says that he wishes that the campus vigil, the small church service that was in Columbia, that the fraternity brothers organized, and the photo op efforts would have been matched the night Riley went missing, the Saturday after he went missing, or before the formal event that night, and at the bare minimum Sunday morning, before getting on the bus to come home without Riley. If those efforts would have been made, there is a good chance there wouldn't even be a Facebook group and that we would have never had the opportunity for the world to know what an excellent young man Riley Strain was. But that's just my personal opinion and not the family. So he's basically saying that all of the efforts that have been after the fact, like a couple days after the fact, that those have happened sooner, maybe Riley would have been found alive, which if any of this is true and it was like a foul play situation, Riley probably died that night. If it was an accident, Riley probably died that night. We really don't know, and I don't know. I'm not at all like giving into the narrative that seems to be kind of coming out in regards to what the family is thinking. But it doesn't seem like law enforcements really doing a whole lot in regards to this investigation. And it could very well be an accidental situation, of course, but it also could be something else, and we are just going to be exploring all aspects of it. And I do have a really hard time reading these posts that are posted because they are very long and drawn out and they don't really make a super whole lot of sense, so I have to kind of go in and dissect them and try to figure out what they're saying. Anyways, if you guys want to follow along with this insane situation on Facebook, Riley Strain Dash, missing Dash, Nashville, Nashville, Tennessee. So that is that on the Riley of it all. And now we are going to move on to Chad day Bell. They officially have their jury. We have ten men and eight women, and they started their openings on Wednesday. I haven't had the opportunity to sit and listen to all of the contents of the openings and all. But I do know that three out of four of Chad's kids will testify in the trial, and I'm going to do my best to try to keep you guys updated on all of the trial happenings. It's going to be hard to just listen to the trial all day long. I work and life and all of the things. But Gigi over at Pretty Lies and Alibi's is going to be doing trial updates. So we are gonna call that good for right now in True Crime, I do want to say I have a lot of new listeners and a lot of new social media followers wherever you are from. It kind of scares me, but also it's exciting at the same time. Also, I had this Right Now and True Crime all recorded, and then today O J. Simpson passed away, so I had to obviously talk about it here on the pod. We're not going to say a whole lot about it. The best post I saw about it was by a goal named Laura Richards on Instagram. She said OJ Simpson is dead, Simpson was found not guilty of the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, but he was found liable in a civil suit brought by the victims' families. That's his legacy. I'm thinking about Nicole Ron. And then in the caption she said good riddance. OJ Simpson is dead. I don't want to hear about his sporting or acting achievements. His legacy is that he was a domestic abuser and coercive controller and he killed Nicole and Ron. I'm thinking about Nicole and Ron and their families who didn't get a chance to say goodbye or grieve in private. And let's just drop the freaking mic on that. We're not going to say any more about it. I don't care about his football, I don't care about anything else. Let's call it what it was, a domestic abuser and coercive controller. And with that, we are going to go ahead and get started with today's episode. Okay, guys, today we are going to be talking about the disappearance of a young man who is named Brian Vladik. I'll call him vlad Hassel. He disappeared on November six of twenty twenty one. In Orlando, Florida. And the only reason I think that I even became aware of Lad's case is because last year at crime Con in Orlando, his sister was there and she was doing everything she could to try to raise awareness about her brother's case, about his missing person's case, and just trying to get the word out. It's what I say all this time on this podcast, like any exposure is good in cases like this, when you don't have a big platform, you don't have a big following, the Internet is literally your oyster. And using social media and the Internet and public networking events like crime Con, that is what they're all about. It is about helping these families and the people that are just out there tirely searching for their loved ones. I know it has to be hard, day after day after day getting nowhere, getting no answers. And I really think that social media, the different types of events like crime Con, the different podcast platforms that we all have available to us, are so huge resources for family members who have somebody who is missing or someone's case who they are trying to get solved. It is so important that we continue to tell these stories and help these families propel the stories forward. So definitely want to give all the credit to Vlad's sister, Irena on keeping his story out there and making it her mission to find out what happened to her brother and hopefully find her brother. I know it has to be hard, day after day after day, not getting anywhere, not really getting any new information, not getting any resolution in a case that you are so closely tied to, especially if it's your family member, and if you are a family member of someone who is missing or a unsolved homicide, I'd know that there are people in your corner and we all want to help you. It takes a village, and that is exactly the number one reason why I do this podcast. The days that it gets hard are the days that we need to push further and further and get more information out there so that way we can hopefully help bring resolution to these families. So to Vlad's sister and family, don't stop what you're doing because it's working, and we're going to get vlad story out there so we can hopefully bring him home safe. So I'm going to tell you a little bit about Vlad, what was going on in his life leading up to his disappearance. He was only twenty two years old when he disappeared in twenty twenty one. His sister describes him as a very outgoing guy, very friendly, always willing to strike up conversations with strangers. So all of this is really important leading up to Vlad's disappearance. But I I first want to go back in the year two thousand and four. Vlad is five years old, and he and his sister Irena are living in a Moscow orphanage and they are adopted by the Hassel family, which consists of eight children, many of whom are already grown, and Cheryl and Steve Hassel. So at this point, Vlad is five years old and they live in Florida. So Irena and Vlad come to Florida. He is given the American name Brian, but he still goes by Vladik or Vlad, So it seems that he has a pretty normal upbringing. His parents to eventually separate and he is primarily living with his dad, Steve. He graduates from high school and then he kind of jumps around. He kind of lives in a bunch of different places. He lives in Texas, he lives in Florida, he lives in New Hampshire for a little while, and then he finally decides that he is going to join the Marines. He had kind of this lifelong want to be a marine, so he did that and that happened in twenty eighteen. By the summer of twenty nineteen, Vlad was realizing that he did not want to be in the Marines anymore. And a lot of it is unclear as to why. I did see something about him having like some childhood trauma from when he still lived in Russia and that was kind of getting in his way of being in the Marines. And he just had a lot of issues like adapting into being in the Marines. So he was honorably discharged, and he told his family that failure to adapt was the official reason why he got honorably discharged from the Marines. So at this point in time, Vlad is staying with his dad, Steve, temporarily, and then he ends up moving in with one of his sisters who lives in Michigan. And this is in January of twenty twenty, so this is pre pandemic. Vlad gets a job working as a environmental service tech in a hospital and he is doing really well here. He loves it, and then COVID hits and the world changes as we know it. And this caused a huge issue in Vlad's life because the daycare that Vlad's sister had her child in was closed and she had to take a leave of absence from her job to be able to stay home and take care of her child, and Vlad was just trying to do the best he could to support the three of them. Vlad essentially ends up getting let go from that job and he decides from there to move back to Florida with his dad. So he moves back to Florida. He's living with his dad and his dad's wife. By this time, it is summer of twenty twenty. Again, we're in the midst of a pandemic. It is not the best time to be relocating and trying to find a new job and all these different things. So Vlad is not working and his father is starting to notice that he sees that something is going on with Flat. He seems really depressed, and I'm sure there was other stuff going on here, but Steve essentially leaves the relationship that he is in with his wife and him and Vlad move and they kind of bounce around. They stay at a few different hotels before they eventually settle in an apartment complex in Orlando, Florida, in November of twenty twenty. This apartment complex becomes a big part of Lad's story and it is the place at Elifeya, located at eleven six hundred Mackay Boulevard in Orlando, Florida. So this is kind of when Vladdox starts to really be vocal about his wont to live off the grid, to go live in the woods and just kind of disconnect from the outside world, which I feel like we all kind of had those moments, especially post pandemic, Like working through the pandemic was really hard, and I feel like for a lot of people it was like this big turn for mental health with them, and they just wanted to completely live off the grid and just kind of disconnect for a while. So vladd did say that he wanted to go off and live in the woods, but he said that he was not going to do that while his father was still alive. He didn't want to leave his dad, and he also didn't want his father to be blamed for him leaving. So as much as he would talk about it, he never really had plans of doing that in the near future, but he had also developed this interest in religion and in heaven, and he would make comments like what is the point if we can just be in heaven. He would claim like different things in the world are just a distraction from heaven, and he just didn't have what he used to have, which was that motivation and that purpose to go out and work. So at this point he starts kind of helping out the local homeless population, and Vlad is a giver. He likes to make people feel important. He likes to give large tips, and he would give cash out to homeless people and give them his debit car to go buy themselves food. Like he was really really a nice, giving guy who just wanted to help. And in the midst of all of this, he's going through this inner turmoil that he's not really talking about. He's obviously sharing with you his dad and people around him that he feels like everything is just getting in the way of all of us being in heaven and we need to just all go to heaven. But he's really not actively getting any professional help for some of these thoughts that he's having. So in September and October of twenty twenty one. This is just a couple months leading up to his disappearance. He gets rid of his iPhone and his tablet. He thinks that they're a distraction and he doesn't want them anymore. He thinks it's just too much. So you can already kind of see he's starting to turn over this new leaf and truly try to disconnect from the outside world. His family wanted him to have some sort of cell phone type of communication, so he got a flip phone at the request of his family, just so they could have communication with him. But as far as having any kind of devices, having an iPad or a tablet or an iPhone, he wanted no part of it whatsoever. So on Wednesday, November third of twenty twenty one, Vlad was driving his father's car. It ends up breaking down and he ends up walking back to his apartment. He is kind of worried that his dad is going to be mad about the car, which of course he wasn't upset about it. They ended up towing the car to the mechanic so that way it could be fixed. November fourth of twenty twenty one, Vlad had a friend that had worked at a nearby restaurant, and Vlad had called him a few nights before he went missing. This is what he said, and said, Hey, do you mind if I stay at your house for a night or two? And for whatever reason, this person told Vlad no, I don't really know much more than that, other than this person was not prepared to have a guest, so essentially told Vlad that he couldn't stay. So that same night, Vlad had made comments to his dad about archangels and demons and would talk about one needed to be dark to kill the dark, and Vlad's father had no idea what he was talking about. He said at this point, he wasn't making hardly any sense at all, But again, he's trying to just be supportive of his son. And you, of course don't ever think that something is going to happen and your son is going to just disappear. Obviously, Vlad was going through something and having some type of mental health kind of crisis. But you never look at something like that and think, oh my god, like he's just going to disappear and he's going to be missing for three years. That's not really what enters your mind. You're just trying to be there for your family and be supportive. But it's evident that Vlad was definitely going through something major at this point in time. Okay, so we're on November fifth, twenty twenty one. Vlad's dad and his adoptive mother and sister leave to go on a road trip to Tennessee. Now, this was a trip that was going to be ten days, and it was a trip that Vlad was invited to go along, and he even was saying that he was going to go, but he changed his at the last minute and decided that he just wanted to stay at home. So his dad left him with one hundred dollars cash and he left him with a credit card. He also said like, hey, I'll restalk the fridge and Vlad said, no, it should be fine. I'll be able to get by. And then Steve tells Vlad that he has a package that's expected to arrive in that ten days that they're going to be gone and ask Lad if he would make sure that he would bring it in, and Vlad said he would. So that day, after Vlad's family leaves, he walks to a place that is called Foxtail Coffee in Florida, not far from where he lives, and he was a frequent customer there. He would go there often and he would get a coffee and then he would just kind of pace in side of the coffee shop. He had his headphones on listen to his music. And this was normal for Lad. Everyone that was around wasn't like put off by this. It was just normal for him. That's what he did. So while he was there on this particular day, allegedly, and I'm saying allegedly because there's no way to prove it, Vlad took a knife out of his pocket and he placed it at the table that he was sitting at. There's another customer there who sees this, and she feels uncomfortable. So this person just proceeds to tell a employee at the coffee shop that they feel uncomfortable and that they're going to leave. This person didn't say this person has a knife, I feel uncomfortable. They just said, I don't feel comfortable here. I'm going to go ahead and leave. Now, Vlad wasn't doing anything with the knife. He literally just took it out of his pocket and placed it on the table. It could have been something like a pocket knife or like a fishing knife or a hunting type of knife situation. He wasn't doing anything erratic to make this person feel uncomfortable. It was more just their perception of the situation. So Vlad, between that time and later on, leaves the establishment and the customer that initially felt uncomfortable comes back later that night and tells one of the workers there that she saw him with a knife, and that is why, you know, she felt uncomfortable. None of the employees at the Foxtail coffee shop saw this knife, so there's nobody that can really even confirm that he had this knife. There is also security cameras, and none of that was captured on the security cameras. So did it happen. I really don't know. It's all alleged, but in my opinion, this incident is what kind of started the super downward spiral of Vlad and led to him going missing, in my opinion. In the early morning hours of November sixth, Vlad calls his biological sister, Irena, and they talked for a little while, and she said it's not unusual for them to talk late at night. It was almost two am, but it's not unusual for them to talk late at night, and she said Vlad didn't give her any indication that he was going to be leaving or going anywhere for an extended period of time. Seven eleven am on Saturday, November six of twenty twenty one, Vlad tries to go back to Foxdale Coffee and the employees of Foxtail decide to call law enforcement and say that Vlad is trespassing because he had a complaint that was launched against him the night before regarding the weapon that was brought out. So around eight thirty am, the cops came out and issued a trespass warning against Vlad and asked him, you know, to please leave the establishment. He's not allowed to be there. And there's video footage of this interaction and it's really hard for me to watch because you can just see Vlad is just like I don't understand what I did, Like what's wrong. He had no indication that he had done anything to upset anybody, and was now being asked to leave this establishment that was kind of like a place that he felt comfortable. He would go there often and he would just kind of get lost in his music, and for someone that's going through a mental health crisis, like I believe Lad was. When you take away their safe space and a place that they feel comfortable, you take away everything, and that's exactly what I think happened. So Vlad was very calm during this interaction, and he was asked to leave, and he did, and he was last seen walking toward a nearby wa Wah convenience store. And that is the last official proof of life citing of Lad that is one hundred percent verified because we actually have it on camera, We see it, we hear the interaction, and that is the last time that anyone sees Vlad confirmed sees Vlad. Later that day, Vlad's phone gets a text from somebody that I guess might live in the neighborhood, somebody that had never texted or called Vlad before, and the text message was never received. Vlad's phone was actually found in his room and it wasn't plugged in to be charged or anything, so he just completely left his phone behind. On Monday, November eighth, the package that Vlad's dad was expecting is delivered to the apartment and it is just left sitting outside of the apartment, and when Vlad's dad returns on the fifteenth, it is still outside, so his family knows that if he was there that he would have brought it in. So there's not really a lot to say that Vlad was evil been back at the apartment at any time between when this whole incident happened at the coffee shop and the fifteenth. But there is a maintenance worker that works at the apartment complex that says that he saw Vlad near the basketball court on November twelfth and said that he spoke with Lad for five minutes. However, this has not been validated and confirmed, so that is why that sighting of him when he last left the Fox Steel coffee shop is the last confirmed and validated sighting of Vlad. On Monday, November fifteenth, there was reports that Vlad went to someone else's apartment in the complex that he lived and said that he was going off the grid, and that was it. Again not confirmed. So when Vlad's dad got back, he noticed the packages, of course outside of the apartment, and then he goes in the apartment and Vlad's is in his room. Like I said, it is near death because it has not been charged and it doesn't look like Vlad even lived in the apartment while he was gone, like at all. There was no food missing, there was no dirty dishes, there was no sign that Vlad had even really stayed there, which again is bizarre. As Vlad's dad is getting home, they're all starting to kind of piece things together, and on November seventeenth, Vlad's sister reports him missing, and they start printing out missing persons flyers and passing those around. Family is trying to get in touch with the apartment complex to see if there's any surveillance video footage, and the only surveillance video footage that the apartment complex had were in the gym and the laundry room, and the footage is only preserved for seven days, which is really crappy and like should be changed in my opinion, because sometimes you don't know that something has happened until seven days later. On November nineteenth, they officially begin searching for Vlad. There's helicopters, police dogs, drones, and there's like a lot of activity trying to find Vlad. They do a door to door canvas and that's when they locate the witness that claimed that Vlad stopped by at three o'clock in the morning on the fifteenth of November and talked about going off of the grid. Law enforcement find a red slide sandal shoe. They found this in the woods during their search, and Vla's father isn't able to confirm if it's his or not. He says he had a pair of slides, but I'm not sure if that is them, if that's the color of them. So every lead they think that they have ends up turning up with nothing. In January of twenty twenty two, night Owl Recognissance joins the family in order to help them assist in the search for Vlad. Actually, night Al Recognizance dot Org is where I'm getting most of the information for this episode, so I did want to give them a shout out. I will also link it in the show notes because it is a really interesting organization and we need to support them because they are doing the Lord's work for sure. So February twelfth or thirteenth of twenty twenty two, between ten o'clock in the morning and twelve pm, there is a possible sighting of Vlad near Foxtail Coffee in Orlando, where he was actually last seen, and this customer reported that they had saw a man who seemed to be having some type of manic episode near the dumpster at Foxtail Coffee, and this man was talking to himself and they said that he was wearing a white top, light colored pants and he was barefoot. And the customer that saw this talk to an employee about it, and then this same witness saw this person leaving Foxtail towards Wah Wah on foot. So the manager of Foxtail tells the family once this comes out that they do not believe that that person was Vlad because they know who Vlad is and they know that Vlad's missing and he was last seen at their establishment, so it's a whole thing. But unfortunately, no video of this interaction was available, so there's no way to really confirm or deny that that was in fact Vlad or not Vlad for that matter. So to this day, present day, April twenty twenty four of Vlad is still missing, his family is still searching for answers, and the last video slash picture of Lad he is wearing what I think looks to be a red slide type of shoe with black socks. So it very well could be the case that the shoe that law enforcement found in the woods did belong to Vlad. I'm going to share all of the photos and videos of that last interaction confirmed interaction. I really don't know about this one. I don't want to think that anything bad happened to Lad, that anyone took advantage of him and potentially saw him in a state of crisis, and you know, of course took advantage of that and tried to harm him. But it's just so interesting that almost three years down the line, there's still no more information or any confirmed sightings of Lad. But he did seem like he was obviously having a mental health crisis. He was in this mind space of wanting to go off the grid, but also seemed to be in that state of mind where he wasn't going to do it because he didn't want his family to worry and he didn't want his family to get blamed for him leaving. So it's a really interesting concept. And this whole incident that happened at the coffee shop, could that have been the straw that broke the camel's back when he just decided, you know what, no one wants me, I'm just going to leave and go off on my own. This is a sign that I need to just leave, But I just don't know if I see him leaving his family. He just doesn't seem like that type. He seems like he was really close with his family, and it's obvious that his sisters love him and want him to come home. They are doing everything they can to try to keep his story out there in the media. Could he have had a massive mental breakdown and be living amongst homeless populations. I feel like that's an entirely possible situation. There was actually a story here locally a couple of years back. This woman who I had like some mutual friends with. I didn't personally know her, but she had had some type of mental health crisis and had gone and was living in a homeless camp somewhere. Luckily, there was some like video footage of her, and her family was able to kind of figure out the area she was in and they were able to go find her, and thankfully she was alive and well. But the mental health of it all is so real, and I think as a society we all need to be better about recognizing it and knowing kind of what to do in that situation. I think given the fact that Vlad was going through something at the time he had that altercation at the coffee shop, and I think that just for him really pushed him over the edge, and it probably upset him more than anything. And he wasn't a violent person, so he wasn't going to act out in that way, but he acted out in a way of just kind of leaving everything behind. And now he's been gone for almost three years, and that's really really sad. And I don't know this person that you initially made the report about him having the knife out on the coffee shop, I don't know if that's a valid thing that happened, if they really were scared that he was going to harm them. I don't think that he eluded any behaviors that would make this person think that he was going to harm anybody. But hindsight is twenty twenty, so you really don't know if that is what caused everything else to happen subsequently, if that's kind of what caused him to officially spiral and just want to be completely off the grid. So that is Lad's story. I'm going to be posting photos of Lad. Of course, he's been gone now for two and a half ish years. He would be twenty four years old. Now, his sister does not believe that he is in Florida any longer. She said, he has friends in the Dallas area from when he was in the so that could be a possible place where he is. Vlad could really be anywhere, and it could be very probable that he is living amongst the homeless population, or he is just completely off the grid and flying under the radar of everyone. But that is why getting his face and his name out there is so so important, because he could be anywhere. So I'm going to be sharing all of those things on my social media, my Facebook and my Instagram pages. Please take a minute to look through the photos of Vlad. Share the pictures with everyone that you know, so that way we can get more eyes on Vlad's story, because he literally could be anywhere, and we need to work together to try to bring him home for his family and so that way he can get the help that he so desperately needs and deserves, because he deserves to be happy and live a very productive life, and his family deserves to know where he is and find him after all of this time, and he needs to know that people are looking for him, and that people care about him. Even strangers that don't even know him care about him. So sharing this episode is of the utmost importance as always, and you know, sharing those photos trying to get it out to the masses. But that is a lad story. I hope that I can come to you with a good update in regards to him being found and him being safe. But I will sure keep you guys updated as I hear more.
