It's one of the weirdest cases of arson I've ever heard. A one-eyed hitman, an adult entertainment and novelty empire, cocaine, tax fraud, hand grenades, bombings, and of course, arson... actually a few arsons. There's no easy way to sum up this case neatly in one coherent description so you're just going to need to go click play and make sure you're sitting down because this case has more crazy than you can shake a rubber anatomically correct appendage at. Join us to find out how "stiff" competition led to this faux phallus flambé on Crime to Burn.

Welcome to Primetime Crime. I'm your host, Kylie. Let's talk right now in true crime, and then together we are going to work on warming up some cold cases. Let's go Hello, Twisted Humans. Do you find yourself wanting to know more about the latest murder, conspiracy, cult, or haunting. Than this is the podcast for you. In nineteen fifty two, there was a record high of UFOs reported fifteen hundred sightings. There has been evidence of human sacrifice, double worship, and it is haunted by more spirits than can be counted. A family of two adults and two kids reportedly saw a giant flying thing with glowing red. Eyes, and meanwhile, the family's nanny that helped Veronica to care for her and Lucia's. Children, was found bludgeoned to death in the basement of their family home. I'm Alicia and I'm Sierra and this is. Twisted and uncorked. Hey, guys, welcome to Primetime Crime. It's Kylie. Happy New Year. Officially, I have been under the weather, and as much as I wanted to get an episode out this week, I didn't want to push myself to try to record through not feeling well. So I am diligently working on a new episode for next week, and I promise it will be out on time on Thursday night. But one of my podcast friends, April, has graciously lent me an episode from her catalog. She does a podcast called Crime to Burn with her husband and they are the best dynamic duo. It is all about arson and fires and the criminal side of things and it is so interesting. So I am going to be sharing one of their episodes for the episode that I should be releasing today. Because the podcast community in the true crime world is the literal best, and we all kind of share ideas and thoughts, and when one of us needs to take a unexpected week off due to illness, we always have somebody willing. To share an episode. So I've shared episodes with you guys from Like Mother, Like Murder, I've shared episodes from a trial by podcast, and today I'm going to share an episode from Crime to Burn. If you do not follow them, please go follow them on all social media, check the show notes for all of that information and give them a listen because they are so good at what they do and the storytelling is great, and it's a different type of true crime. It is the arson part of true crime, and it's fascinating. April shares a lot of knowledge because she has experience. She is a former firefighter. She works as a fire protection engineer, so she has a lot of insight, knowledge and experience, so she's able to kind of elaborate on different things. So they're amazing. I love their podcast. Please give them a listen, check out today's episode, and I promise I will see you back next week for a brand new case. I am working diligently on it right now as we speak, and I am feeling much better, thank the Lord. But I was super under the weather. I don't know. I think I had stripped through which I have never had before. So that's the reason I think that's what it was, because it was the actual worst. But I am on the end and feeling a heck of a lot better. But I hope you guys enjoy today's episode from Crime to Burn and please go follow them over on Socials and I will see you next week for a brand new episode. Have a great one, guys. Buy Before we get started, a quick warning, this episode is not going to be appropriate for children. This particular case features an arson at an adult entered tainment establishment, and there will be discussions of the types of activities that take place in these kind of establishments, so listener discretion is heavily advised. This week, on Crime to Burn, we head to the Pacific Northwest with a story so absurd I don't even know how to introduce it. All I can say is that stiff competition among purveyors of adult pleasure resulted in a real life cyclops firebombing a rival raunchy retailer. This case went unsolved for years until one kinky conspirator agreed to assist investigators shining a flashlight or maybe a flashlight into some dark and seedy corners. Join us now to find out how a fiery passion turned into a pile of faux fallus flombay on Crime to Burn? What the hell you got me into? I just wanted to say, faux fallus Loombay. Welcome to Crime to Burn, where we explore the dark city landscape true crime intersects with arson and criminal negligence. Join us as we sift through the ashes and bring you the story of what really happened. Welcome to Crime to BURNE. I'm April, a fire protection engineer, former firefighter and alliteration addict. I am shocked and aghast. All Right, a quick reminder, please go follow us on social media. We're on Facebook, X and Instagram. If you have constructive feedback, we would greatly appreciate an email at crime to Burn at gmail dot com instead of leaving a low review, so we can have the opportunity to consider your feedback and address your concerns. We haven't gotten any low reviews yet. But I saw a podcast that I really like and the person wrote a low review because they didn't like the background music they chose. And I was like, they didn't say anything about the content, They just said the background music was annoying, And I'm like, why don't you reach out to the podcast first, Like there's a podcast I tried to listen to that I couldn't listen to because of something that they did with their audio. And I emailed them and was like, hey, I don't know if you guys realize this is an issue and here's why, and they were so grateful. It's very thoughtful. But that little box is right there, you can just right there. It's actually harder harder to find a little box than you think. I never find a little. Box, depending like every podcast app that you can use has a different method for leaving reviews and comments, and sometimes it can be hard to figure it out, figure out where you put your fingers to do the thing. I'm trying so hard to hold back. I'm just going to pick the most tasty ones. I'm gonna let a lot of it go because we'll never get done all right. Once upon a time there is a man named Michael Wright. Only Michael would not live up to his moniker, but it's easy to see how things went wrong. He was born in the late nineteen forties, the son of a pimp and a well known madam. In the nineteen sixties and seventies, he was spending his time learning from professional burglars and safecrackers, and soon he took up the family business of pimpin. He raised his pimp hand in Bigani's journey. I'm guessing he got the purple velvet suit and everything. I hope so, I hope you had a feather in his hat. Anyway. In nineteen seventy one, mister Wright was indicted when police said he killed a former boxer that roughed up one of his ladies of the evening, and he was sentenced to prison. Note that Wright maintains to this day that he did not kill this guy, and somehow he only had to serve two years even though he was given a life sentence. Maybe he got out early on pimp and behavior. Don't I don't know. I have some theories. I'm not going to go into smooth behavior. By nineteen seventy three, he was out, and six years later he was officially off parole, and this opened him up to new avenues. He could choose to live the straight and narrow, or he could get into the cocaine trade. Guess which path he chose. I hope he chose cocaine. He chose to chef his opportunities, write up people's noses in return for their cash. After all, he had only had half of the hookers in blow equation. It's time to even things out. In nineteen eighty four, Write met a man named Dan Cosette, who owned adult bookstores, and together they bought a building in Portland, and not just any building. According to sources that I read, the building had been quote passed from criminal group to criminal group unquote four years. I feel that this is important because their ability to purchase building that's being strongly implied here to have ties to nefarious organizations means that our erstwhile purveyors of porn powder and places to put your pickle probably had some ties to some of those less than upstanding organizations. It's probable they bought the building, slapped a big yellow sign on it, and christened her Cindy's. Now we'll be back to Cindy's, but let's take a little field trip first. We're going to take a little field trip to Washington because Wright and Cosette had several business partners, which included both of their wives, and they decided to use their hookers and blow investments to expand their enterprises. They open up a shop in Washington Vancouver, Washington called Adults Only Video. I believe at this point they have several shops for reasons that I'll get into later, But so they've opened several shops, but specifically we're going to be talking about adults only video in Vancouver, Washington. Now, the thing to know about these businesses, they don't just sell your typical adult novelties. You can get your reading materials, your videos, your and your. Chicken. Yeah, but what you could also do was get a little private booth where you could insert some cash and enjoy some artistic interpretations of nature. While these films were probably not heavy on plot, apparently it was the cinematography that drew art fans to these inspirational movies, and the private screening rooms allowed these art fans to fully experience the inspiring nature of these films away from less appreciative art critics. How quaint and unsanitary, you. Just kind of appreciate the art. A lot of times you're trying to get the art of the artists, but in this case you're trying to get the content out of the viewer. Oh my god, I feel nauseous. Anyway, it awesomemed to be going well for our uplifting little business Dynamo or since both of their wives are involved a business quartet. Actually, they had a lot of different organizations involved with them. So maybe, for lack of a better term, I was little business orgy. What do you wear that? I don't know. So they're in business as adult bookstore owners, and I use the term book really loosely. Here do they have some books? I'm hardbacks? Honestly, I don't know. I did not find a list of their inventory. It's not the hardcovers they're after. So they're running stores in both Washington and Oregon. And during this time, both Cosette and Wright are in and out of prison on drug charges. By nineteen ninety eight, Wright is finally out of prison for the last time a freeman. Unfortunately, even though Wright claims he was trying to run his businesses on the straight and narrow, he was sure that the city of Portland, where Cindy's was located, had it out for him. And honestly, I'm not sure that he's wrong. But before you pick sides, let's talk about some business chalent is that he was also facing in his store in Washington. The man's always trying to get pimps down. The name of the store in Washington was called Adults Only Video, And in two thousand and three, our little pod of businessmen heard some less than ideal news. It seemed as a competing store was opening less than a mile away from this Washington store. And to make matters worse, this competing stores owner had his own novelty item manufacturing business, so they were going to be able to undercut the prices of adults Only Video. Because Adults Only Video was paying suppliers and having to pay middlemen. They could give you more for less. Now, in cases like this, a businessman has only a few options. Option one is to do business things to lower overhead, increase the value to the customer, attempt to recognize economies of scale, things like that. Or option two is to firebomb the competing business. Attempt to murder the owner and throw a few grenades for theatrical effect. One of those is a lot more boring than the other. I mean anything that includes grenades. There's just a temptation there because theatrics. I'm not going to say I hate the strategy. So as the competing store called Desire Video owned by one Levi, and I have no idea how to say this last name Busonich. I think it's my best. It's my best try. So, as the competing store called Desire Video, owned by one Levi Busonich near's completion and their own grand opening, our little write cosette business orgy made the only logical decision and made a deal with the real life cyclops. Of course, the businessman turned to their associate employee. Honestly, I'm not sure. The relationship is pretty fuzzy. Ken Courtney and somebody in this whole business orgy. Maybe Ken, maybe somebody else get in contact with some hired muscle enter Mark Duane Fuston, who goes by Mau Mao. Son of m Papa mal Maou. Fasten, has one eye. He's a former deadhead and reportedly a member of a notorious biker gang. Whether or not he was still a member at this time is unclear. So our little brain trust brings Mau Mau into their idea to resolve their business concerns in the most efficient way possible. Now you may be wondering what qualifications this Mau Maou has, since binocular vision certainly isn't one of them. He must have a history of excelling in business negotiations. Well, he does. Actually, he was convicted in nineteen seventy seven of attempted arson of a gasp adult bookstore in Spokane, Oh. He has experienced specific experience. I really wish that I found more information on this fire, because he was actually caught leaning a ladder against the building and in possession of a gas can, gloves and matches when police arrived and he was arrested. He was either not convicted or not indicted, or he was convicted and was later acquitted. I'm not totally sure. It's not totally clear, and I didn't really have a time to dig into it deeply. But either he had a really good freaking lawyer or his professional ties had their hands in some pockets or around some necks. I'm not really sure all that's alleged. I have no proof from just making some guesses based on the absurdity. Now, one article said he was convicted, but another said he was acquitted, and another said he was never even indicted, So lots of conflicting information. Now. His resume doesn't end there. In nineteen eighty one, our friend Wright was learning the cocaine trade while Fusten was allegedly killing a man at a Portinland motel over a one hundred and eighty dollars drug debt. He was acquitted. The case is still listed as unsolved. Then in nineteen ninety one, a Portland, Oregon porn shop accidentally swallowed a pipe bomb and blew up, and a man matching Fusten's description was reported in the area. Probably just a coincidence. I mean, one eyed biker gang members with a connection to porn and drugs are probably a dime a dozen in Portland. They're hiding behind every tree. And then of course he rounds out his resume with a two thousand and five conviction and two assaults on women for what. We have no idea, but one source said that he broke a woman's wrist over a fifteen dollars debt allegedly, but I was not able to corroborate that. I don't know if all the viewers understand that this is before all the inflation. I mean, fifteen dollars, that's like what today, that's like probably thirty bucks now. Probably so get the gravity because they understand the gravity. Thank you, that's why you're here. So Fustin and Courtney make plans to prevent their porno purveyor associate from suffering the injustice of market competition and come up with a plan. Courtney will make a bomb and Fustin will sever a propane line, feed it into the building, and plant the bomb, which can be remotely detonated once he's safely away from the building. They will collect payment from the right Cosette conglomerate and everyone is happy, except for Levi Busonich. However, Courtney is apparently not a skilled pipe the bomb maker, and the bomb did not detonate, But Fustin is a professional, and so he brought a backup plan in the form of gasoline, which he then pours on the building and leaves a trail away from the building so he can ignite it from a point that is safely far away. And it works like. A charm, hopefully with the zippo and slow. Motion probably, and they escape while the competing business burns to the ground, resulting in a loss of over eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars. And like, what on earth was in that building, because that seems like a lot of money in silicon and. Lubricants, lube, super flammable, I don't you even know? Not the water based ones, but if you have a petroleum. Based one yet, I was just curious how you would even burn down a loube. It's like a self extinguishing I don't know. Well, okay, so the lubricant that's water based would not be flammable silicone though, the uh, rubbery materials and plastic materials used in a lot of adult novelties definitely flammable. In fact, I was not involved in this case, but I had a former boss who once received a shipment of adult toys at work because it was part of an arson case, and he was sending them to the lab to burn them to determine the heat release rates. People that apparently sent the package. That's a story to everybody. At least the packages did not. They didn't. They apparently didn't send them as discreetly as they might to their mail order customers. And yeah, it was it was quite the story around the office. But they really did go to the lab to be burned. He had he had the burn test reports. From I'd fake some burn test reports too, No, not to the office, not to the office. Well, what's funny is in a burn test like that, you have to like be very specific in describing the fuel package. Fuel package, and so you have to be like in each individual box there's. A they have to describe, like if it burns, kipped the balls. Or no, they just have to describe like the general size and shape. And because the geometry of the exterior of the fuel package can affect how it burns. So like that's what she said, all right. So this resulted in a loss of over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Luckily, there was no casualties except for the blow up dolls. A moment of silence for the blow up dolls. Maybe I love you? Or two? What I love you? What does blow up sheep got love? EWU? Is that real? Yeah? It is. I only know that. I only know that because somebody gave it to somebody as a gag gift one time. That's why we can't have nice things anyway. Police begin investigating and recall that two other adult shops have had incendiary fires, and so they immediately suspect arson. And I'm not sure exactly how well the police knew our brain trusts criminal history, but apparently they began staking out some of the people that worked at this competing adults only video including Ken Courtney. Now, nobody explains how this happened. I could not find any documents to clarify this, but at some point police managed to convince Courtney to become an informant in this case, and I suspect, but again, this is just my suspicion. There's nothing to prove or corroborate this. That because the businesses are still heavily involved in the drug trade, which we will find out here shortly, perhaps Courtney was facing maybe some charges related to that, or possibly there's rumors of even some less savory human trafficking types of activities going on, and maybe Courtney was involved with that, and this agreement was perhaps to lessen his charges in another type of case. But that's just purely speculation on my part. There's no way to know for sure. But I don't think Courtney just random the police and was like, hey, I as involved in an attempted bombing and arson and I think you should know about it. So there's gotta be a story there. Now, Courtney tells the police that his associates are involved in an illegal pot growing operation. As opposed to all the illegal ones at the time. Yeah, and he agrees to record some conversations, so he records a conversation with Fustin our cyclops, in which they discuss what to do about the fact that our competitor, Levi Busanich is actually rebuilding his incinerated investment. They decide the obvious approach is just to lob a few grenades through the front windows and kill Levi along with any unsuspecting art patrons that might be in the shop enjoying those art films, because yes, Levi's shop is also outfitted with these artist appreciation booths. If you're curious. The reported going rate at the time for murder By grenade was ten thousand dollars. Is there like a menu? I don't know that. They didn't actually tell me how much they got paid for the first arson, even though I tried really hard to find it. But they did say that the agreed upon rate for the grenading was going to be ten thousand dollars. And when was this? This would have been in two thousand and three. Wow, where were people getting these grenades? I had no idea they were that easy to come by, nor did I. That's probably why it's so expensive ten thousand dollars because the grenades are kind of pricey. Ten thousand dollars is expensive for killing someone. I thought it was just I thought you made up a thing that where was like ten thousand dollars reached grenade you threw in there. No, it was he was going to be paid ten thousand dollars for ensuring that mister Busonich was in the corner's office. I'm an idiot. So he killed a dude for ten grand. He was going to that was the plan. I feel like a lot of these people are underrepresented in like they need an agent or something. They're not They're not fifteen bucks over something one hundred and something bucks for something ten grand from murder. Somebody used to be negotiating a little harder. Yeah, I wouldn't. I would never agree to murder some anyway. But if I did, it would definitely not be for ten thousand dollars. It would have to be for enough money for me to disappear forever. I would want something more interesting, stock options. Or something something traceable. Cash is so boring, all right. So it seems like at this point our brain trust is getting some sweaty palms that maybe the police are looking at them a little too closely for this arson of Levi's shop. So in an attempt to throw investigators off the trail, they decide to put it for sale sign in their window and pretend that they'd been about to sell the place the whole time, and so why would they even care if competition was opening up? After all, at this point they were in a little bit of hot water back in Portland. Now, to hear mister Wright talk about it, the city just wanted to close this unsavory business that he'd work so hard to build, and so he claims that officers would sit and wait outside and watch for known drug users and drug dealers to enter the business to appreciate the art. And they knew that in the privacy of their little art appreciation booths they would probably partake of some of their vices, and so the police would then barge in on probable cause bust these people taking part in their vices. And while they were there, they would note any fire code or building code violations. So it felt a little like entrapmant to mister Wright, and I'm not sure that she's wrong there, but they did find more fire and building code violations. Then you can shake a rubber appendage at everything from a collapsing roof to open electrical boxes and proper wiring, no fire extinguishers. I mean, I could cover the entire list, but we would be here all day and it would be pretty boring. It was a nice place, is what you're saying. Yeah, mister Wright believing and possibly correctly believing that the code violations they were being cited with were the result of a witch hunt to take down what was viewed in the community as a moral and offensive business that attracted crime, including drug abuse and possibly human traffic. Right and Cassette Cosette were starting to feel a little bit backed into a corner. Do you do you not think all that's true? You said it, like really sarcastic. I was so moral, right, Yeah, noah, big rubber dongs. I was saying that as though I was looking at it from the perspective of writing Cosette, like, Oh, they're just too squeamish about our business. That kind of arts not for everyone. That kind of art is not for everyone. So they're feeling pretty backed into a corner until they got a call about that for sales sign in their Washington store. It turns out they had a very interested potential buyer, one that was not worried about the new competition down the street, because he was the new competition down the street. You see, Levi Busanach had seen the sign and thought, oh what luck. And at this point the investigation into Levi's fires was still only known to the police, and at so Levi had no clue that the cops were looking at the owners of adults only video as potential conspirators in the fire that burned down his establishment, nor does he know that anyone is talking about taking him down with a grenade or two. So they set up a meeting to show Levi their operation, and when they do, they reveal two important things to him. First, they reveal that they're selling both a store in Washington and also that fire code nightmare down in Portland. They of course neglect to mention the string of fire code violations racking up daily fines, because if they can pawn that off onto somebody else, why would they not. And the second thing they show him is that the business is actually worth a lot more in real life than on paper. Why well, it goes back to those private art appreciation booths. You see, there's companies that apparently make these and sell these booths, and they're designed to track the income that comes into them to allow business owners to report this income to the IRS in accordance with the law. However, adults only Video is feeling a little stingy about its tax obligations, and they're throwing their own little Boston teabagger party right there in Washington. So you're telling me they were paying taxes to the government perview of these art exhibits. No, like it would track how much money the art exhibit brought in and then you would pay your taxes on that as income to the business. But you totally missed my Boston teabagger party. I am letting so much go on this episode. I don't know what to grab onto and what's too slippery, you know. So they've actually designed their own booths and their own software that allows them to collect all of this money and not log a single transaction, because money the IRS doesn't know about is tax free. Now, Levi is seriously considering taking this up on this deal and adding the assets of the brain Trust to his own erotic empire. However, he has no clue again that the ATF is about to take down the brain Trust for racketeers. It seems Courtney has more info than just the alleged arson and the potential upcoming murder for hire. He also inclued the government in on the tax evasion and the drugs and who knows what else in these nefarious organizations. However, before the ATF can move in, Courtney is called into a meeting with the brain Trust and immediately after that meeting he commits suicide. So the ATF has lost their informant. There was nothing about the manner of suicide or any theories, and I'm just gonna leave it at what was reported as suicide. So it seems that our investigation sort of ends here, seemingly. For a while, however, mister Wright was still dealing with that Portland issue and he was not done vexing Portland just yet. But in the meantime, the roof actually did collapse at Cindy's like fell in. So the city condemns the building and tells the brain Trust that they either have to take down the building themselves or the city will take it down and build them for it. So they take it down themselves, and they're mad and they're angry, but they decide that they're not done giving it to the city, not yet, So he suit the city for how they were handling entering his business and claiming that they were targeting him because of the adult nature of the business, and maybe the code violations were real, but because they cited so many at once, he had no chance of being able to pay the fines all together, so he couldn't correct the problems because he was paying so much money and fines blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Anyway, the building gets demolished. So now Wright and Cosette own this vacant lot that is not generating any income, and he's probably got some tax of asion issues brewing up in Washington. I'm guessing that the drug trafficking probably got a little bit with ATF watching as every move, and so he decides the best thing to do when the city screws you over is just do everything you can to piss them off. He basically said, if you didn't like an adult business here because it brought some elements of crime and unsavoriness, let's put something that's going to make the city even more squeamish. And he made the city downright. Apoplectic, he opened a Krispy Kream. He made it a homeless camp. Oh. He had ties to a group called Dignity Village homeless community in northeast Portland, and they moved dozens and dozens of homeless people and had them pitch tents and live in a vacant lot. The local business owners went nuclear. The city was not to be deterred, and so they began finding him again for operating a recreational campground illegally, but he took it in stride, filing lawsuit after lawsuit, and after two years, the city was finally ready to talk because what he wanted the whole time was for the city to buy the lot back from him, including the lost quote unquote revenue that he lost because of their interference in his business. Now, they did reportedly eventually reach a deal, which it definitely included waving all of the fines that he had racked up, but that wasn't good enough for Right. He wanted them to pay for all that lost income, and he agreed that if the if they agreed to his terms, then he would give half of his settlement to the homeless. Now, one person of the city described Right as a person that just wouldn't get out of his own way, and they described this as a cynical attempt to coerce the city to buy the property. Now, this was all covered in this very interesting news article that almost seemed to like paint right as some sort of like Robin Hood. Yes, and at the time, Wright said that he was mostly retired, but he did have his one remaining business, that adult video store up in Vancouver, and he planned to fully retire soon and he was just going to move to Costa Rica and be done with all of these silly regulations and fines in the Pacific Northwest. Now, what I found really interesting is that the author of this article, which was written in two thousand and three, in I think it was November that it went to press, he interviewed a lot of the police and prosecutors that had known right throughout his entire quote career of being accused and convicted of murder, dealing cocaine, being involved with all these criminal enterprises, and they all seem to have this weird sort of respect for him in their recounting of his colorful life and their encounters with him. In fact, one even said that, yeah, he was a tough guy, but he never roughed up anyone that didn't deserve it. A cop said that, But this article does not address the racketeering, does not address the firebombing and the potential murder for hire because the ATF had still not moved on that information that they had gotten from Courtney because they needed a different informat to step in and they were still trying to work those back avenues. We don't think outlaws are devoid of morals. Oh, I know they're not. But it just so happened that a month after this article went to press, police arrest our Cyclop's friend, Fustin. Now they have Fustin because they have him on tape from those recorded conversations with Courtney discussing the bombing and the potential grenade murder, so they arrest him and they hope to maybe have him take over as an informant so they can take down these big boys. But he's either not playing ball or he doesn't know enough because the police apparently don't have enough to move forward against the organization, or they just won't move forward against the organization. I'm not really sure why. They never really explain it, but they do charge Fustin with the firebombing, and he does negotiate a deal, and he serves three years for the arsenal, even though he told the police that yes, these people hired him to burn down Levi's store, but because the statute of limitations for the conspiracy charges was apparently expired, police could not charge Right Cosette or any of their other business associates. And while in custody, when Fuston confessed to the firebombing of this business, he also confessed to that those two other porn store fires, the one where he was literally caught red handed and the one where there was a bombing and somebody saw him in the area. So apparently firebombing is just part of their business model. Now. Fuston was sixty one when he was sentenced, and I was unable to find any follow up about what happened. But more interestingly, I was unable to find any follow up about what happened to the Right Cosette business organization. I looked and looked. I mean, you saw, I was up really late. I tried. I looked at neighboring states. I looked for anything on the Justice Department press releases and stuff. I have to assume that, with knowing that there were involved in tax evasion and potentially what certainly smells like some organized crime, that the Justice Department has probably not turned a blind eye to them, and there has to be something growing. But Fustin was convicted in twenty thirteen or twenty fourteen, ten years after the fire, and I can find nothing since then about right Orcosett. They're probably happily retired. Probably in Costa Rica. Tending to a flock of inflatable sheep. And that is the story of I don't even know what to call it. Pyro for pornos, I don't pornographic, pyromaniacs, the artist's appreciation arsen I don't know. Well, I was just thinking, you know, there's that museum in New York called the Guggenheim. I don't understand why they didn't name one of their stores the goo Genheim, because. You weren't around for. That quest group call me, no, don't call it. If you sit an artist down and give him or her every media available in mankind and say just make something, they'll just sit there and look at everything forever. And so I feel like this episode's kind of going there's so many opportunities for any window that you can't take que and you know what to do, like a deer in the headlight. Yeah, I feel like I've been dominated sexually and it's uncomfortable because I'm not used to that. I'm not sure how to deal with it. Like I when I was doing research last night, I had more than one moment where I was like, do I really want to google that? My sidebar ads are going to be really weird for a while. But but the other thing I couldn't find that I would like. I was trying to find the answers. So between the time that Busanich was negotiating with the brain Trust to potentially buy these two stores, maybe more stores, I don't even know somehow that the deal fell apart because Busana to this point did not know these are the people that had burned down a store or were planning to kill him, And so I don't know how that deal fell apart, Like did the ATF like tap him on the shoulder and be like, hey, you don't you don't want a new business with these guys. We can't exactly tell you why right now, Or did he get scared off by the fact that there was potential tax evasion charges or did he hear rumors that there is issues like I was really disappointed I could not find more information about what happened pasted Fustin's arrest and conviction. Well, don't get too nosy. Oh no, I'm not. I'm not going to get too nosy. But you know, this was the case that I basically found, researched, and wrote in one day. And I think it's probably a good thing because I think if this was a case like our next case is going to be, I would have gone down some deep, deep rabbit holes giggity. So all the information I got for the case I got from one really amazing Vice article and then I filled it in with newspaper articles from the Spokane and Portland areas and Washington. And then after Fustin was arrested, Busanich went and sued the Peanuts out of the brain Trust as I've been calling them, for burning down his business, but not just for burning down his business, for racketeering. Actually, Civilly sued them under Rico rules for racketeering and criminal conspiracy, and he sued them for five million dollars plus. I'm not exactly sure. It just said starting at five million dollars basically in the civil suit. So a lot of the information about what the atf knew came from that court filing. The only thing I could not determine what the final settlement was. And if I had more time, I probably would have been able to get that information because it is in the court docket, but I couldn't download it. I would have had to reach out to the court and get it. I have time, so if you're really interested in finding out how that end, you can probably find it out. So to give our viewers a little sneak peek of our next case, because I've already started talking about it on social media, our next case is a serial arsonist that operated over at least five counties in Maryland for ten years. And the case is actually still a current case because there's currently an appeal pending and I don't yet know how many parts it's going to be because I've listened to only one full day of court so far. I have all the court recordings, so I have a lot of listening to do this week. But I actually started researching this case before I started researching the Benson case, so I'll have a lot of really amazing information for you guys. So hopefully we'll be able to start that next week. It just depends on how fast I can get through the court recordings, so we may have one more fill in episode, or we may be able to start it next week. But I hope you guys at least find these little filling episodes amusing. It's just I want to be able to bring you the full deep dive giggy into the deep dark holes. It's gonna be like shooting fish in a barrel. I didn't know we're gonna do it in the daytime. Get a few beers in me creative. I'm ocean inspector forty two. Forty two, and I think you need Jesus, and I'm only slightly aroused. You evidently know more about this world. I only do because it was in the fire depart. I'm known in Calcutta as Harry d Angler. Stick it to us, I say, a pimp's love is not like out of a square. After all, he only had half the hookers. I'm sorry.
