Let's talk right now in true crime, and then together we're going to work on warming up some cold cases. Let's go. Hey, guys, welcome to this week's episode of Primetime Crime. It's Kylie. This week's episode is way longer than my normal episodes. This one's a little bit over an hour, so we are going to make a really quick right now. In true crime, There's just a couple of things that I want to talk about that have gone on in. The last week. First thing is first the Commonwealth, So the state has rested in the trial of Brian Walsh, who is accused of murdering his wife on a Walsh. This whole thing has been wild. Trying to keep up with the trial and the trial coverage and everything. It's been pretty easy because I just listened to recaps from pretty lies and alibis. However, the things that are coming out that have come out that there is video. Surveillance video of Brian in Low's buying buckets and other items while wearing gloves and a mask to try to conceal his identity in twenty twenty three is truly wild. I have no words. The amount of evidence they have against this man is insane. Now the Commonwealth rested today. Today's Wednesday when I'm recording this, so I'm going to be really curious to see what the defense has to say, how they're going to spin this. Their whole thing is, yes, he disposed of her body, but he didn't kill her. There's Google searches. There is a mountain of evidence that this man allegedly was involved in his wife's murder. It's going to be interesting to see. I think the jury is going to come back so quickly with their verdict once this goes to the jury, because it is so cut and dry. I know it's never a slam dunk, but this is as close to a slam dunk as I believe you can get. Just my opinion, all right, Next thing I want to talk about is earlier this year, Authrum Labs in the Woodlands, Texas identified two victims that were initially thought to be tied to the Long Island serial killer Rex Humerman, and they were a mother and her baby daughter, so they were identified as Tanya Jackson and her two year old daughter, Tatiana. So there had been speculation due to the location of their remains that they might be potential victims of Rex Huremen. And it was just this last week that they made an arrest in the case, and that is none other than the daughter, Tatiana's biological father, Andrew Dykes. He was arrested in Florida and charged with the nineteen ninety seven murder of Tanya Jackson, who is Tatiana's mom. So all of this is really interesting because I think people were kind of waiting for charges to be brought against Rex, but they're not rushing obviously to bring charges against him, because he already has so many against him. And it's very important in. Cases like this that they do get it right and they make sure that they have enough evidence to bring charges against a particular person, because if they had just assumed that Rex had to be involved because they were in the same area that his other victims were dumped, but the evidence wasn't really lining up, and they just went ahead and charged Rex with those two homicides as well, then Andrew would have gotten away with these two murders. So it's really really important that they do their due diligence, and I think they're doing a great job at thoroughly investigating all of the bodies that were found on Gilgo Beach and tying them. Back to the respective person. Rex Huerman is not an angel by any means, but we don't want him charged with murders that he did not commit, because that means that the person that did commit those murders. Is out walking free. So this was a little bit of surprising news, but I was glad to hear that they officially made the arrest and that they are going to be moving forward with pressing charges. Okay, I think that's it that I really wanted to talk about for right now. In true crime, however, I will say if you guys haven't watched the Netflix documentary on Ditty, I highly suggest you watch it. There is a lot of. New and different information in there, and I think of all the Ditty docs that I've watched, it's probably one of the most well done. It is disturbing, it is upsetting, but all of this stuff that has come out about ditty has been very enlightening. It's been stuff that I have thought and suspect did for years and everybody that heard me talk about it said there's absolutely no way, and now there's absolutely a way, and it's literally that is the truth. So if you haven't watched it, I highly suggest you watch it. I have about one episode I think left to watch, but it has been very, very interesting and I think it's really well done. So that is it for right now in True Crime, and we are going to go ahead and get into today's episode, which, like I said, is a longer. For my regular weekly episodes, I typically try to do about thirty. To forty minutes. I feel like that's my sweet spot for a weekly episode, just because I know for me sometimes I like a shorter episode because I like to listen to it on my commute to work and I like to be done with it by the time I get to work. And obviously I listen to a lot of podcasts. It's probably all I do at this point in my life. And sometimes the ones that are longer, it takes me like several trips to and from to listen, but it's fine. I enjoy listening to longer episodes. I just also enjoy making shorter episodes. I enjoy making longer episodes. I enjoy it all, to be honest, But this one is a little bit longer because the story is pretty complex and there was a civil suit involved, and I go through every bit of the civil suit. I go through everybody that testified, everything that was said, and there is a lot of back and forth. But this one is a doozy. So, without further ado, here is this week's episode. Okay, guys, today we are jumping into a brand new unsolved case. I am going to be telling you. About this case that I learned about from a billboard while I was on my way home from Louisiana. Now, anytime I'm out and about, I'm always on the lookout for unsolved cases in all aspects of my life, and random billboards are no different. So I saw this woman, Kathy Pays, on a billboard and decided to look into her case, and here we are. Kathy was thirty four years old when her life was taken from her, A young mom, taken from. Her two daughters. Her case deserves to be solved, and like so many others that I cover, I believe that this one honestly can be solved. This is again one of those episodes where I'm going to be laying out all of the evidence of this case, letting you know the facts, and letting you come to your own conclusions about what happened and who's responsible. Kathy's family has publicly shared their thoughts on who's responsible for Kathy's murder. We're going to get into all of that in a little bit, but let's go ahead and learn some more about Kathy, who she was, and then we're going to get into her case and where everything stands today. Kathy's case was also covered on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries and first aired on April third of nineteen ninety eight. Lucille Catherine Kathy Fulton Paige was born on January eighth of nineteen fifty seven in Hollandale, Mississippi, to her parents, James. And Dorothy Fulton. Kathy married Stephen Allan Paige on November eighteenth of nineteen seventy eight. And they had two girls. They had their oldest daughter. Aarin, in nineteen seventy nine, and a few years later, in nineteen eighty three, their daughter Monica was born. They lived and raised their family in Vider, Texas. Steve worked as an insurance salesman and Kathy worked as a waitress at the Hofbrow restaurant in Beaumont, Texas, which is not far from Vider Now in nineteen ninety one. At the time of Kathy's death, her daughters were twelve and seven. Her and Steve had been married for thirteen years, but shortly before her death, her and Steve had separated, and according to Kathy's family, they were headed towards divorce. Steve had actually moved out of. Their shared home and was living in an apartment nearby now. He said that although separated, they remained friendly towards one another and they were able to share the parents and responsibilities of their two daughters. So now we are. On the morning of May fourteenth of nineteen ninety one, a local passerby saw a car that had seemingly been in an accident. It was kind of partially in a ditch and alerted the Vider Police Department. The Viter Police Department came out and discovered that this car was in fact stuck. In a ditch and had been in an accident. And this was only about one hundred yards away from the home where Kathy Page and her children lived. There was a woman inside of this car who would go on to be identified as thirty four year old Kathy Page. Now, at first, it seemed. Like this was just a tragic accident, but as investigators began their investigation, they reali that none of this added up. Despite the accident, Kathy had no apparent injuries to her body, the car was barely damaged. There was soft drinks in the front seat that didn't even spill. Over in the accident. The position of Kathy's feet didn't match up with her being in an accident, as they were more pushed back to the seat versus being extended towards the pedals. Kathy did not have a seat belt on, but despite the accident, her body was in a reclined position in the front seat. It just didn't add up to this being a tragic car accident. Kathy was also not wearing any makeup or jewelry, which we're going to talk about that in a little while, because I do think it's an important part of the story. They ended up identifying her and then they went to. Kathy's house to contact the next of kin and Steve Page answered the door. They told him that Kathy had been killed in this car accident, and the investigator initially noted that he was acting very odd. He was very up and down with his reactions. Of course, he was emotional, he was upset, he was crying, and then all of a sudden he would just kind of turn it off and he would be fine. Now, I very much know that we can't. Judge somebody by their actions when traumatic news has been told to them, But for the investigator, the way that he was acting was just very odd and it kind of stuck out to him that just something didn't seem right here. And pretty much from that day forward, Steve would be considered. The number one suspect in his wife's death. So an autopsy was completed on Kathy. And it proved what investigators had suspected. Kathy did not lose her life due to this car accident. She had been strangled, her nose was broken, and she also had a black eye. There was also bloodstains noted on her underwear and skins. Although there was no evident. Bloodstains on the outside of her clothes, investigators speculated and believed that she was killed elsewhere, cleaned up, dressed, and placed in the car, and then this accident was staged. Investigators, of course, questioned Steve and he said that Kathy had asked him to come over to babysit the kids because she was going to go out with her friend Charlotte in Beaumont. He said that she left the house around eleven fifteen pm and by four fifteen am, that is when she was found de ceased in the car. The autopsy also showed that Kathy had been sexually active the night of her death. Now here's where we're getting into another layer of the story, because it turns out that Kathy had not gone out with her friend Charlotte that night. She had actually gone to a motel in Beaumont with a guy she had been seeing, and she spent the night there with him. They brought this guy in. He gave investigators all the information they needed. He said that they did in fact have sex that night. He was cooperative with the investigation. Willingly took a polygraph test and passed with flying colors. But the autopsy revealed. Something different about this sexual intercourse that Kathy had had, and it was that whoever she had sex with that night had had a vasectomy, which this guy that she had been having this relationship with did not have a vasectomy. But there was somebody in. Kathy's life who had had a vaseect to me semi recently, and that would be none other than her husband, Steve Page. Now, when he was questioned about this, he admitted that they did have sex that night before she went out. Now, Kathy's sister, Sherry, does not believe this to be true. She does not believe that Kathy would willingly. Have sex with Steve who she was separated from, and basically they were headed towards. And then she would leave and go see another man. And from everything I've seen and heard during the research of all of this, it seemed like Kathy was pretty much one without the door, ready to move on. From her relationship with Steve. She had made a decision to separate enough for him to leave the house, even though their separation was pretty new. I just don't think that this version of events makes a whole lot of sense, not saying it's not possible that this did happen, because there are oftentimes people separate, they divorce, whatever the case may be, and they do end up getting back together. But Sherry, Kathy's sister, does not believe that this is a true story of what happened, and I think she probably knows her sister pretty well. There are two sides to every story, as we know, but this is the side that Steve is telling that they did have sex and then she left to go what he thought, hang out with her friend Charlotte, but she really went to a motel with this guy that she had been seeing. So according to Sherry, long before Steve moved out, he was already sleeping on the couch. So there had been I assume, probably some not so great moments in their marriage leading up to this separation and Steve finally moving out. So for me, that's just another reason that I think Kathy was kind of ready to just move on with her life, get a move on with everything, and start a new chapter in her life, be a good mom to her girls, and co parent with Steve because he was the children's father, And for me, it sounds like that's exactly what she was doing. So investigators, although they were suspicious of Steve, they didn't really have a lot to go on. Kathy's family, of course, had their own opinions of what exactly happened. And I think that this theory. Makes a lot of sense when you look at the chain of events and what happens following. This night out that Kathy had. So Sherry said that she spoke to Steve's sister in law that night, who said that Steve made two phone calls. One of the phone calls was to Charlotte, Kathy's friend that she was supposed to go out with that night, and the other was to the motel where Kathy had met the guy that. She had been seeing. So basically, Steve discovered that Kathy was lying about where she was going, kind of did a little bit of investigative work, called Charlotte, and I think he called her and hung up, and then also called the other number, which was the number to the motel, and when they answered and. Stated who it was, he hung up. I think that's when he realized that she was lying to him about where she was going. So Kathy's family, he believes that Kathy came home from her date at this motel with this man that she had been seeing, and Steve had been there obviously he was watching his daughters and they had all fallen asleep, Kathy comes in, Steve confronts her. She is in the midst of taking off her makeup, taking off her jewelry, washing her face, and he asked her what was going on? Why did you lie to me that kind of stuff? And he became angry with her. He sexually assaulted her and then he strangled her. They then believe he cleaned her up, placed her in the car, and staged the accident to cover his tracks. Now, Steve, like I said, has. Always maintained his innocence and he is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. I just want to be clear about that. But on the episode of Unsolved. Mysteries, he gave his own theory about what happened to Kathy. Now, he is quoted as saying, I receive threats on the phone that the same thing that happened to my wife could happen to me. There's a certain person here in Beaumont that may have been involved. It's a very prominent family, an Italian family, to let you know that they're considered part of the Beaumont mafia. End quote. So in his head he might have gotten threats. I don't know if that is fact or not, that is what he is saying. But he said he received these threats from somebody in Beaumont, and this person that is involved in Kathy's death is part of the Beaumont Mafia. I'm gonna honestly leave that one alone because I don't really have anything productive to say other than from what I know about the mafia. Anytime the Mafia is involved, things are always a little bit mysterious. But I don't think this stage. Crime scene really screams mafia involvement in any way, shape or form, because it's sloppy, it's messy, and usually the mafia is really good about covering their tracks. So although Kathy's case is technically still unsolved because nobody has ever been held accountable for her murder, her family believes that their thoughts about her final moments are exactly what happened and that that is true, And they even doubled down on it and put billboards up in Texas, not just calling out the Vider Police Department, but also calling out their number one suspect, Steve Page. The billboards would eventually go on to inspire a movie called Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and this movie came out in twenty seventeen, and it was inspired by the events of Kathy's murder. So these billboards were very straight and to the point. Vider police botched up the case waiting for confession. The other one read, Steve Page brutally murdered his wife in nineteen ninety one. Wider Police department does not want to solve the case. I believe they took a bribe. The Attorney General should investigate. Another one reads in ninety one, here invited he got by with murder, and then there's a picture of Steve Page labeled Steve Page. Now, James Fulton had these billboards put up along Eye ten, and it, I guess technically was put up on property that he owned, so there was really nothing that anyone could do about it, including Steve Page. Now the billboard I saw was along Eye ten. I know it has Steve's picture on it, and I also saw a picture of Kathy and I saw her name. But of course going by it not expecting to really be seeing anything, because. It's just miles long of I ten. When you're driving, there's really not a whole lot going on out there. It went by so fast that I wasn't able to read all of the text that was on the billboard, but I do love this public kind of calling out and basically just making people very uncomfortable and standing by your thoughts and beliefs. Steve Page has addressed the billboards and how everything that was done following Kathy's stuff really ruined his life. So to say, these are his words, they are not mine. And in a Daily Mail article he gave an interview, and this interview took place in twenty eighteen. I'm gonna link the article below in the show notes so that way you can read it for yourself. So in this article now again this was twenty eighteen, it says that Steve Page is now sixty one years old living in Houston and says that he has done nothing to regret. He talks about the billboards and how they very much upset him and his family because he had, you know, the kids that he had with Kathy, the two daughters he had with Kathy. It was really upsetting that they had to drive that, but he said there was nothing that he could do about it because James Fulton owned the land that the billboards were on, so he had every right to put them up. Steve did eventually remarry and, like I said, moved to Houston. That marriage would later end in divorce. And he said that the police very much botched the case and basically told the family that Steve is the one that was responsible because they couldn't figure out what really happened to Kathy, and then everybody just turned their anger towards him, and he said it ruined his entire life. And I think Steve saying this is interesting because James Fulton, Kathy's dad put the billboards up in nineteen ninety three, which was two years after his daughter was murdered, and the Viner Police Department, although they did have their suspicions of Steve Page, James Fulton is doubling down on these billboards and also accusing the Viner Police Department of misconduct and not doing the right thing. So it's basically he said, she said, when it comes to Steve Page and the Fighter Police Department. If he's saying that they pointed the finger at him because they didn't have any other leads and then the family just kind of went along with it, it doesn't really super line up for me that that's the case. Now, it wouldn't be the first time that a police department, especially a small town police department, because Fider is a very small town, it wouldn't be the first time that something like this happened, and it was mismanaged by the police department. But I just think in this one, there is so much he said, she said, and truth be told, there are only two people that know what happened that night, truly know what happened that night, and one of them is no longer with us, and that is Kathy Page. And the other one is Steve Page, who just has said that this whole thing completely ruined his life and that everyone point out their finger at him. In the article, they talk about how Kathy's family initially really liked Steve and approved of the relationship, but Kathy's sister Sherry never really cared for him and said that he was controlling and mentally abused Kathy. Now, Steve, on the other hand, in this article said that he was a good husband and father and said that Sherry is completely off the edge, and that is a direct quote from Steve Page in this Daily Mail News article. Now, Steve Page also says in this article that police repeatedly told him that he was not a suspect, even though it had been announced on TV that he was a suspect in Kathy's murder, and still to this day it's reported that he is the number one suspect in Kathy's murder. He also said that he was cooperative with the investigation offered to answer any questions they have. He also said that he was never asked to take a polygraph test. James Fulton, on the other hand, said that from what he knew, Steve Page refused to take a polygraph. But there is one thing that Steve Paige and James Fulton, Kathy's father, agree on is that police botched the investigation. Of course, they are saying this for different reasons. Steve thinks that the reason that the finger has been pointed at him is because they didn't have anything else to go on and they just kind of blamed him because he was the obvious person to go to. And James Fulton is doubling down and saying that the viter Police department took a bribe and that is why Steve Page is not in prison right now. Steve said that it should have been very easy to get evidence from the car because he and Kathy had washed it earlier that day, so if there were any fingerprints on it, they should have been able to get them. But they didn't go there and investigate it like they should have. There was a bunch of cops there. They were all touching the car, so any evident that they did have could potentially have been contaminated by all of these small town Bighter Police department cops. Touching the car everywhere. And he said, if there had been fingerprints on that car, it wouldn't have been his because he had nothing to. Do with it. And he said they wouldn't help him at all. They basically just smeared his name quote unquote, to hell and back. So Steve lived invited until nineteen ninety five, and he said that the billboards basically just made him want to relocate because he also had his daughters. So it was at that time that he decided to move away and relocate. Now, that same year, nineteen ninety five, he was also convicted of desecrating Kathy's grave. Now, he says that he was basically baited by the Fultons into desecrating this grave. So Kathy's grave was obviously in the cemetery, and there had been this is, according to Steve Page, some fake, cheap looking flowers, plastic flowers on Kathy's grave, and he removed them. I don't know in what capacity, if he threw them off, kicked them off, I'm not really sure on that, but he was found to be responsible for this. Now in the article, it goes on to talk about what he is doing now. Like I said, he's living in Houston. He works as a carpenter. His daughters eventually were sent to live with their paternal grandparents in Huntsville, Alabama, and they did become a strange with Steve. Now he is back on cordial terms with Aaron, at least he was in twenty eighteen when this article was published. Monica passed away in twenty eleven from a drug overdose. And then the article goes on to talk. About how Steve Page basically says he's too busy in his life to remember his wife Kathy. He told dailymail dot Com quote, after a certain time, people that aren't part of your life, they aren't part of your life, and you don't think about them. You've got other things to think about. I'm so busy in my job literally, I am overwhelmed in my job right now. I don't have time to think about nothing. I don't have time to think about anybody else. End quote. He goes on to. Say that he's very private, he's very suspicious of people. He doesn't trust anybody. He doesn't want anybody to know him because eventually people are going to ask him about Kathy and blame him. For her murder. And the last quote of this article is, I wish I had moved earlier before my kids got too much pain. I regret the police lied so much, but I haven't personally done anything to regret end quote. So for me, that is a little glimpse into Steve Page kind of his mindset on things where he stands, and that he is standing by the fact that he has done nothing wrong. And it's basically the Vider Police Department and the full that have just come for him and come for his character. So although nothing really came from anything in the investigation, the Fultons wanted to do something, so they ended up filing a wrongful death suit against Steve Page, and he was in fact found liable by a civil jury in the year two thousand and Kathy's family was awarded one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Steve would go on to appeal the decision, but it ended up being upheld. So we're going to read through the civil suit because I think it's very interesting. There are many people that testify during this civil trial, and I think it really lays. Things out now. Like I said, Steve was also convicted, fined, and sentenced to probation for desecrating his wife's grave, and they have video evidence of this, so there is really no getting around that. So in the civil case, we hear from many people, one of them being Sherry, who likes I mentioned earlier, is Kathy's sister. She said, from what she knew, Kathy and Steve's marriage was rocky and headed for a divorce. She was aware that Steve and Cathy slept separately and that Steve would sleep on the couch. She also testified that. Sometimes during arguments that Steve would push or shove Kathy. She also said that Steve and Cathy had a fight on May sixth of nineteen ninety one where Kathy asked for a divorce, and shortly after this is where Steve moved his stuff out and into an apartment nearby. Steve's brother also testified that he never saw Steve push or shove Kathy. Steve said that he never physically hurt his wife and also denied ever getting into any serious fights with her. Monica, Steve and Cathy's daughter, testified to the fact that she and Kathy shared a bedroom. Aaron testified that she never saw her parents get into any type of physical fights or that Steve slept on the couch. Steve testified to the fact that he wasn't aware that Kathy was having an affair. On Sunday, May twelfth, nineteen ninety one, this was Mother's Day. The whole family went to the beach that day and Steve would fry shrimp and cook out for them. They decided that Steve would. Go back home to his apartment that night, but they did spend the day together with their daughters. So seemingly in this it seems like Steve and Kathy are getting along. They're trying to. Do what's right for their girls, which on both sides is respectful because at the end of the day, when you are going through a separation and there are children involved, it's really all about the children. So it seems like they were both trying to do what was right for their kids, so Steve did, in fact sleep at his apartment that night, and on Monday, May thirteenth of nineteen ninety one, Steve went to the house to help his girls get ready for school and then dropped them off at school. He made some work calls, and then he came back to the house before noon, and he and Kathy washed the car together. That afternoon, the girls both had baseball games, and they traveled to the ballpark separately. After Monica's game, Kathy took Monica home. Now Kathy, when she was the first one to arrive home, she would typically park next to the house. Steve and Aaron stayed at the ballpark until her game ended around nine pm. They came home between nine thirty and ten pm. Charlotte testified that Kathy called her around nine thirty ten o'clock and told her that she was going to go out and not to answer the phone in case Steve called to check up on her. Charlotte knew Kathy was seeing the man that she had been seeing, but this was the first time that Kathy had asked Charlotte to cover for her. Steve then testified that he had left to go home, but before ten thirty, Kathy had called him to ask him to come back and watch the girls. He said that he parked on the far side of the car port when he got there, and he when he arrived at the house, Kathy was wrapped in a towel and it was at that point that they had sex. He then said Kathy left around eleven fifteen to eleven thirty. He said that she was dressed in a gray blouse, white pants, and white shoes. She had on a watch, her earrings, and a wedding ring. Steve said he watched TV for a bit and then he went to bed between eleven thirty and twelve. According to Steve, Kathy never came home that night. Charlotte said her phone rang about two thirty am, the caller hung up and she just assumed that it was Steve. During the investigation is when the investigators learned that Kathy had been with another man at a hotel in Beaumont that evening and when she left Beaumant at two thirty in the morning, she was wearing the same clothes that she was found in except for her socks, watch, earrings, ring, and makeup were not located on her body. Sherry's sister testified that Kathy always wore her ring, but she said she always took off her earrings and watch before bed. She would always shower. And take off all of her makeup and put her hair up as well before bed. That was kind of like her nighttime routine. Tuesday, May fourteenth, nineteen ninety one. Now this part is directly from the case law File website because this is about Kathy's body and car being found and then letting Steve know what had happened. I'm going to read this directly from there. I am not modifying anything. Is directly on casefilelaw dot com. Detective Ray Moseley testified that he arrived on scene soon after five am Tuesday, May fourteenth, nineteen ninety one. Kathy Page's car was nosed down in a ditch one hundred yards from her home. The car faced away from the house. There was very slight damage to the vehicle. There was no evidence that the brakes had even been applied. The evidence indicated only a slow roll into the ditch. The vehicle was extremely neat and clean, except for two Werderberger cups on the floorboard. The rare view mirror was turned left and touching the windshield. The only blood found in the car was located on the head rest. Kathy Page's body was in the driver's seat. Her purse was upright on the seat. The seat belt had been disabled. Her head was tilted to the right and leaning against the head rest. There was blood at the back of her head, but no other blood was visible at the scene. Her nose had been broken. Marks on her neck indicated that she had been strangled with a left hand. Closer inspection revealed transfer blood on the inside of her clothes, an indication that the clothes were put on the body after the injury was inflicted. A blade of grass on the bottom of the back of her jeans indicated the body had been dragged. She wore no makeup, no watch, no jewelry, no wedding band. He removed the body and placed it in an ambulance for transport to the High Hospital, took the car in and went to the Page residence. No lights were on. Detective Mosley had known Steve Page for most of his life. Steve wore only boxers. When he answered the door, he was not putting shorts on Steve said his wife was not there and asked if it was about her. Steve stepped out and looked at the vehicles. Detective Moseley had not mentioned Kathy yet. Lieutenant Carter, who accompanied Moseley, told Steve that Cathy was dead. Steve became emotional, throwing himself on the couch and crying, but in the light of his flashlight, Moseley noticed that Steve had no tears at all. Lieutenant Carter informed Steve that Cathy had been strangled. Steve did not ask to see his wife. Detective Mosley was there for fifteen to twenty minutes. Steve was asked to turn the lights on, but he never did. Detective Mosley noticed that there were clothes on the living room floor, So that pretty much paints a picture of how that whole interaction went, from Kathy's car being found, Kathy being found, them going through the investigation of it all, realizing that Kathy had indeed been strangled, and then notifying. Steve Page of what had happened. Which this all took place one hundred yards from the Page home. Charlotte went on to testify that Steve had called her between five thirty and six am, and he wanted to know where Kathy was. Charlotte told him that they had been out together and that Kathy had left to go home around two am. He told her that Kathy did not come home. Charlotte then called the hotel where the man that Kathy was seeing had been staying, but nobody answered. Steve testified that he awoke just before six am. Kathy wasn't home, so he called her friend Charlotte, who said Kathy had left around three AM. Now, within minutes, the police arrived while he was in the process of getting dressed. According to Steve, he was in the process of putting shorts on when he own open the door. To the cops. Steve said that the policemen were people that Steve had known for a long time, and they told Steve that Cathy was deceased and whatever had happened, it was made to look like an accident, and they told Steve that the car was only one hundred yards away from the Page home, and he walked out could see all of the flashing lights, some police cars and everything just one hundred yards away from the home. He admitted and testified to the fact that he said he didn't want an autopsy done, and he did not want to go to the scene and did not want to see Kathy now. Dorothy Fulton, who is Kathy's mom, testified that shortly before six a m. Steve had called her and told her that something had happened to Kathy. She said when her and her husband got to the Page residence, Steve was in the house walking around the living room. He was wiping his hands with a wet cloth. He was wearing a white two shirt, red shorts, and had a scratch on his nose, and he was also barefoot. Dorothy also noticed that Steve was in the process of doing laundry when they arrived that morning. She didn't necessarily see what he was washing, but she said that there were clothes on hangers that were laying on the living room floor, which she thought was a little bit unusual because they had a indoor clothing line which Kathy normally would hang her clothes on, so the fact that they were laid out on the living room floor was a little bit unusual and kind of stuck out in her mind. But she didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, just him doing laundry. Kathy's bed had not been slept in And on the other hand, Steve denied that he was doing laundry that morning. When Dorothy arrived. He testified to the only laundry that he did that day was the sheets from his daughter's bed, and he also denied the fact that he had a scratch on his nose. There was a reverend who was present, and he testified that it was still dark out, so it was the early morning hours, and he had arrived at the Page home and went into the kitchen to use the phone, and he said that he could hear the clothes in the washer on the spin cycle, and that is a very distinctive sound. Also important to note, Dorothy said that the girls were still asleep at this time when they arrived to the house, because it was early morning hours, so both of the girls were still asleep at this point in time. So if him saying that he was washing the sheets is kind of his reasoning for why he was doing laundry, it technically wouldn't line up because both of the girls were still asleep in their beds. Now, there was a woman named Patricia who testified that her husband called her between four thirty and five am and told him that he saw Kathy's car in a ditch and that there was police there, so he assumed something had gone on, so she took it upon herself to go grab coffee and bring that over to the Page home between the hours of six thirty am and seven thirty am. She said at that point that Dorothy was already there and both of the girls were still asleep. She said she. Had gone in and out of the kitchen while she was there. She was only there for about fifteen minutes, and she didn't hear any laundry being run at that point in time. Steve's brother, Ronnie, also testified that he arrived at the house around six thirty am and he never heard the washer running at all, but he did recall Steve say something about having to wash the girl sheets. So then Steve goes on to tell Dorothy. Kind of the events that happened that night leading up to Kathy being found. He said that Kathy had asked him to come over to watch the girls because she was going to go out and have a drink with some girlfriends, And he said that she had been out drinking with friends the night before and basically just kind of drove off into the stitch and broke her neck, which is what caused her death. He then told Dorothy that he hoped he never found out who killed Kathy, and he also said he did not want the police coming inside of the house because they might find blood on the carpet because Kathy allegedly cut her leg while she was shaving. Now, this is. According to what Dorothy Fulton had testified to. This is what she was told allegedly by Steve Page. This is her account of what happened. Now. Steve denied telling Dorothy that Kathy had cut herself shaving. He said that he made the comment about hoping that they never find out who did this because a friend of his had told him that Kathy had been with the man at a hotel, and then there was also rumblings of Kathy being involved in using cooked cain. Now, during this trial, Steve said that the statement about Kathy having used cocaine was in fact not true. She did have a prescription for valium, and he explained that he heard rumors from other people about drug use and basically just repeated those rumors. Kathy's other sister, who is named Jan, testified that she went over to the Page residence around sixty fifteen am, and Steve was up and doing laundry. She actually saw him carrying clothes. He said that Kathy had been out drinking that night and she was likely drunk. She was taking her valum, and that she drove into a ditch and died. She also testified to Steve telling her the same story that he had told Dorothy Fulton about. He didn't want the police department to come in because they would find blood on the carpet and that is where Kathie had bled because she. Gaped her legs on the living room floor. And he also said he hoped that they never found out who killed Kathy and jan Kathy's sisters straight out asked him if he is the one who killed Kathy, and Steve of course denied it and also said that he didn't even know that she had a boyfriend. Steve also said that he had called Charlotte around two thirty am, and that Charlotte had told him that Kathy had just left. During the course of this story, Steve had changed the time of the call from three point thirty to four thirty. She also testified to noticing a lot of laundry on hangers lying on the floor in the living room, but also mentioned not seeing any blood anywhere. And I think it's interesting because Steve is the one that is obviously telling and talking about this blood on the carpet. Now, there was not any blood that anyone saw on the carpet, at least these family members who were at the Page home after Kathy's death. Nobody saw any blood on the living room floor. But Steve is the one who is bringing up this blood and it could be a very simple explanation. She could have easily cut herself shaving. It happens. But it's just interesting that he is bringing this up to multiple people, but then he's also denying that he brought it up. You have two different people testifying, and they really don't have a reason to lie. Kathy's mom and Kathy's sister. I just don't see them having a reason to make this up in their head if it wasn't in fact something that they were told. James Fulton, who is Kathy's dad, testified that he and his wife Dorothy, arrived at the house around six ten am and they didn't stay a super long time. They left shortly thereafter to let Sherry know the bad news in person, and then he said he returned to the house around seven a m. And he noticed that Steve's car was parked on the right side of the car port, which was under the shed. The police then returned to the house and they told Steve that they needed to do an autopsy, and he said that he didn't want anybody cutting on Kathy's body. James is actually the one that authorized the autopsy to take place, and he said that he heard Steve say again he didn't want police in the house because they might find blood on something because Cathy had cut herself shaving her legs. The story happens again. James then tried to convince Steve to let the police in, but Steve said that he knew the police department had planted stuff on some of his friends before, so he didn't entirely trust the viter Police department. Even the people that were on the scene on the case were people that he had known for pretty much his whole life. So I think that's a really interesting tidbit as well, that he is speaking this kind of stuff to people that are surrounding him. Diane, who is another one of. Kathy's sisters, testified that she received the news around six thirty am that Kathy was deceased, and she called a mutual friend of theirs, who is named Roger, and asked him to go and check on Steve and be with Steve during this terrible time. Now, Roger testified that Diane had called him around eight am and asked him to check on Steve, but he also said that she had asked him to kind of look into what happened to Kathy. Diane denies having. Asked him to do this, but Roger ends up going to Kathy's workplace and starts asking people about men that Kathy might have been seeing. Steve and Kathy's daughters both awoke. Around eight am that morning, and there was nothing unusual that they had seen or heard over the course of the night. Now, shortly before lunchtime, Roger had called Charlotte at her job to let her know that Cathy was in fact deceased, and Charlotte didn't really know how Roger knew where to call because this was Charlotte's first day at her new job. And I don't really know where Roger fits into all of this. I don't know his exact relationship to everybody, but it seems like he was just a friend. After leaving and returning back to the Page residence, Dorothy Fulton ended up leaving about eleven o'clock and then later that afternoon it is when she got confirmation that Kathy had indeed been strangled. James Fulton testified that he returned back to the house around eleven and Steve was asleep on the bed, and again James said he noticed that there was clothing on the floor, but he didn't see any blood stains or anything like that on the carpet. Steve then testified that around noon on that Tuesday, he had learned that Kathy had been at a hotel in Beaumont with another man. Diane, Kathy's sister, said she arrived at the Page residence around one pm and she noticed that Steve's car was parked on the right side of the car port. Now, the police would go on to ask Steve about Kathy's jewelry, and he said that he looked in her jewelry box and noticed that some of her watches were gone. So Detective Moseley interviewed Steve Page at the police station on Tuesday afternoon, and Steve had told detective Mosley that he did not want cops in the house because they might find something that could incriminate him. And they did supposedly examine Steve's face and his hands, and there was no evident marks on his body. There was a telephone call placed from the Page residence to Steve's lawyer around four sixteen pm, and he said he is not the one that made that phone call because he said he was at the police station at the time. He said he thinks Roger or his brother made that call for him. Now, I want to be clear, if you are in the midst of an investigation like this, your wife has been found murdered, essentially, I am not opposed to you contacting a lawyer. I don't think that's a sign of guilt necessarily. I think it's more of a sign of you trying to cover your tracks and make sure that you go through their proper. Channels with stuff. So when someone lawyer's up, I don't automatically assume the worst. I just assume that they are doing. What they're supposed to be doing, which is protecting themselves. So even if Steve had contacted this lawyer, I don't entirely look at it as a sign of his guilt. Now, there is about fifty thousand other things that might point in a different direction for me personally in my opinion, allegedly, but him getting a lawyer doesn't really matter to me at the end of the day. Steve's mom also testified that she saw him cry actual tears when he found out what. Had happened to Kathy. So he was emotionally upset, very tearful, and she testified to this during this hearing. We are now on Wednesday, May fifteenth of nineteen ninety one. So Kathy's brother, who was named Jimmy Fulton, said that he visited the Cow's Wednesday around seven am and he stayed for about thirty minutes. Jimmy asked Steve point blank if he killed Kathy, and Steve denied it and said that he would never hurt her. Steve said that Kathy had been seeing other people. Steve then said he called Charlotte at around three am, and Charlotte said Kathy was not there and had never been there. Steve told Dorothy, who was Kathy's mom, not to believe any of these friends that he was the one who killed Kathy. He then talked about the cocaine and valium again and casually talked about spilling fish grease on the carpet in the living room. Sherry, Kathy's sister, visited on the same day as well and said that there was a strong smell, and Sherry inquired about it. Steve said that he spilled some grease on the carpet and was therefore cleaning the carpet. She said she also noticed some fans that were in the kitchen, which Steve said were to help to dry out the carpet. Sherry said that at six o'clock she was on the phone getting ready to call her mom when she noticed that Steve and his friend Roger were both there, and Roger had a Manila envelope in his hand, and she said that they walked into Monica's bedroom. They shut the door for a few seconds. Then they walked out and they went into Aaron's bedroom, so both Steve and Kathy's kids rooms. She said they were in Aaron's room for a few minutes, and she said the envelope was bulky and made kind of a metallic sound when they were handling it. Roger would go on to testify that he did bring over a paper bag that had candy in it, and Steve testified that Roger brought a bag of candy and it was not in fact a Manila envelope. A woman named Teresa testified that on Wednesday, a member of the Page family rented a carpet cleaner. Her coworker, who is named Elvi, testified that Steve Page was there renting the carpet cleaner with two women that were in his family and also a little girl. Steve is the one who personally returned the carpet cleaner once he was done with it. Steve's sister, who is named Donna, said she arrived at the Page family home Wednesday night and she said Steve was very upset. He appeared depressed and was not acting right for the next two weeks. He was very upset, crying actual tears, and she didn't see any blood anywhere. So this next part is really odd. So Thursday May sixteenth, nineteen ninety one, they were all at the funeral home and Steve wasn't feeling well and Roger, who is one of Steve's friends, basically asked to view Kathy's body and Kathy's brother Jimmy was there and he agreed, and Roger had asked Jimmy to leave, but he didn't leave. He ended up just turning his back, and Roger allegedly was touching Kathy's face and her body and ended up sketching her face on a piece of paper. Roger, however, does deny. That he touched Kathy or sketched her, took any pictures of her. I guess there was also rumblings of him taking jewelry off of her or putting jewelry on her. I don't know. All of that is really weird. And it was later that evening that Diane heard Steve say that he hoped they never found Kathy's killer. Friday, May seventeenth, nineteen ninety one was the funeral, and Sherry said that Steve looked very distraught, but he wasn't crying any actual tears. He wouldn't say Kathy's name and basically was referring to her body as it. Again, that is all just so weird to me. I don't even know what to say. It is now Saturday, May eighteenth of nineteen ninety one, and Steve is at this point still insisting that he spilled grease on the previous Saturday, and he's insisting that this grease spilled on the carpet in the same spot where he and Kathy had had sex previously, right before she died. And then Dorothy Fulton, Kathy's mother, testified that Steve he was also burning something in the backyard, and Steve's explanation for this is that he had missed trash collection on Tuesday, so he was burning the trash in the backyard. So his explanation for how the grease got on the carpet is he was bringing this trash out to the backyard to burn. It, which I don't understand. I miss trash day often, I just wait for the next trash day it happens. So anyways, he said that he was in the process of carrying this trash out to the backyard and he had a Manna's jar that was full of grease, and it ended up falling out of his grip and opening up getting all over the carpet. They used towels to clean it up and then burned the towels. Again, that's weird, just throw them in the trash. I don't know, just my opinion. And then he talks about how he used a carpet cleaner to clean up the grease, but not a carpet cleaner that he rented. He only used a carpet cleaner that he already owned. Now Aaron, who is Kathy's daughter, said that she did witness the grease being spilled because the jar had popped out of Steve's hands, but she wasn't able to pin down a date as to when this occurred. Monica, Cathy's other daughter, said that there was no grease spilled and the carpet was not shampooed. Now. Steve's mom and sister both testified that they saw the grease being spilled and it happened after the funeral. Marjorie had a little bit of conflicting information in regards to if the top was on the grease or not on the grease. She gave two different variations of that, and they both also said that he already had a carpet shampooer and he. Did not rant one. Basically, what this is setting up is that spot on the carpet. If you are of the belief that Steve is not telling the truth about what happened, that that spot is the spot that Kathy potentially lost her life. Or was putting up a fight for her life before she ended up being placed in the car. So the explanation for the reasoning behind the stain and the cleaning of it and everything that goes into it is very important, and the timeline of when it happened is also very important. So that's why they're harping on the stain so much. We are now on Sunday, May nineteenth, Dorothy said she came over to the Page House on Sunday and she saw Steve's sister in law Linda, shampooing the carpet and James Fulton, Kathy's mom testified that there were three people, including Steve's mom, that we're all working on this carpet stain. Steve had told Dorothy that he wasn't able to find any of Kathy's watches and for some reason, they had all disappeared. Jimmy Fulton, Kathy's brother, had testified that Steve's mom's sister and sister in law was working on cleaning the carpet. When he inquired about what was going on, Steve's mom said, you're not going to believe this, but we spilled grease on the carpet and she was right. Jimmy did not believe that because the reason that he thought that this just was complete in abs was because the path to the side door where Steve was going with this supposed trash was covered with linoleum, and this area on the carpet, it wasn't like a trail like if you do accidentally drop something and it drips, it's usually a little trail of drops on the carpet. This was a actual spot on the carpet that they were working on. And at this point in time, the Fultons had known that when Cathy was killed, that she had lost some blood somewhere in a struggle, and it was at this very moment that Jimmy knew that, in his opinion, Steve had killed Kathy. Over the next week, Steve is made aware that the Fultons do think that he had something to do with Kathy's death. He thinks that the Viter police are out to get him and are going to come inside of the home and plant evidence to make him essentially look like he had something to do with Kathy's disappearance and death. Later in the summer, Dorothy ended up being in the mall and she saw Steve and Aaron in the mall and Steve said, good news. We found all of Kathy's watches. They just miraculously showed up in the house. They were in Aaron's room, basically insinuating that Aaron had taken them and put them in there. Aaron says she did not take them in there. So all of the watches that were missing from the Page home did show up, according to Steve, except for the one that Kathy was wearing the night she died. That one has still not been found. They then talk about Steve kicking the flowers off of Kathy's grave and he just said he was very angry about her family's behavior. He claimed that Kathy's sister Sherry, said that the family would do everything they could to harm the children, which I just don't believe for a millisecond that that actually was said. They've already lost Kathy, why would they want to bring harm to her children. Now. Years after Kathy's death, they did do a lumino search for blood and it was conducted on the carpet at the Page family home and the test ended up being inconclusive. And they also did some soil tests from soil in the backyard that was also inconclusive. There's also a lot of different testimony about Steve being left handed versus Steve being right handed. There was an individual who. Testified that he saw Steve Page sign a contract at one point with his left hand. Steve Acourse denies this because Kathy was killed according to everything from the medical examiner, with someone's left hand. So there was just a lot of back and forth about Steve being left handed versus being right handed. Steve had also mentioned to Monica that they were probably going to be moving to a bigger house with the insurance money that they got from Kathy passing away. Now, this next part is directly from case law find law dot com. I'm going to read it Steve had motive for killing Kathy. There's evidence that the Pages engaged in volatile arguments and that Steve had acted out physically towards her in the past. That Steve and other witnesses denied that he abused Kathy does not mean the jury cannot believe the witnesses who said that he did. In addition to the evidence of the emotionally charged atmosphere in the household, there was an obvious crisis in the Page family Kathy was having an affair and had just moved Steve out of the house and into an apartment. They were divorcing, Although Steve denied having any knowledge of the affair, there isbstantial evidence that Steve followed Kathy to Beaumont, although he claimed he never left the house, his car moved from one side of the car port to the other. A telephone caller to Kathy's friend hung up without speaking, but Steve contradicted himself by telling people that he had spoken to Charlotte in the middle of the night and been told that Kathy had left, then denying he called Charlotte before five point thirty. Steve also mentioned Kathy having a boyfriend hours before he supposedly first learned she was seeing another man. Someone arranged the body to make it appear that Kathy had died in an accident. Steve does not contest to homicide finding, but argues that there is no evidence or insufficient evidence that he is the person responsible for Kathy's death. The circumstantial evidence supports an inference that Kathy did reach home before she died. The car was found very near the house and pointing away from it. Makeup clothing and personal effects on her person when she left Beaumont. Were not on her body. Kathy was reclothed after she was killed. Steve argues that it is just as plausible that Kathy was killed out of remote location, but the evidence that she had engaged in her nightly makeup routine makes it more likely that she reached her home. Steve admitted having sex with Kathy the night she died. His explanation is not particularly credible. Steve claims that the day after she kicked him out of the house, Kathy willingly had sex with him on the living room floor, moments before leaving the house to meet with another man. While it is possible, the jury did not have to believe it, especially considering that a few hours later Kathy was beaten and strangled to death. The jury could have believed that Kathy returned home and that Steve had sex with Kathy. Then there is conflicting evidence whether Steve is left handed or right handed. There is evidence, however, of his strength and dexterity with both hands, so that Steve could have held Kathy's throat with his left hand while he struck her on the face with his right hand. At any rate, the evidence does not eliminate Steve. Steve's behavior following the discovery of Kathy's body Indicate's guilt. From his first contact with police, Steve knew Kathy had been murdered, yet he failed to mention it to her family, instead repeatedly stating that Kathy had killed herself in an automobile accident, something he knew to be false. He also falsely said that Kathy had started using cocaine. It appears Steve deliberately misled Kathy's family about. How she died. Steve also supplied an implausible explanation for why blood might not be found in the very spot where he admitted to having sexual intercourse. His explanation for why his family spent day shampooing the carpet and the same spot is highly suspicious, considering several witnesses testified that he mentioned spilling grease on the carpet days before this spill occurred. Likewise, Steve was watching laundry the morning his wife was murdered. Although he did not live at the house, his daughters were still asleep and his wife would not need fresh clothing. He and a friend went from room to room, putting things in an envelope. All of Kathy's watches disappeared, and it was discovered that the watch she had been wearing in Beaumont was not recovered from her body. The jury also heard evidence that Steve was afraid the police would discover incriminating evidence in his house, while Steve supplied innocent explanations for his activities in the days following Kathy's murder, Considering all the circumstances together, the jury could have rejected those explanations and inferred that Steve was tampering. With evidence in the house. Likewise, the jury could have decided Steve's hostile actions at Kathy's grave were directed towards her rather than her family. Viewed in the light most favorable to the verdict, we cannot say the circumstantial evidence is equally susceptible too conflicting inferences or theories. If, as the circumstantial evidence indicates, Kathy returned home before she was killed, there was only one person there who had both motive an opportunity to kill Kathy, Stephen Page, and the jury ends up finding in favor of the Fultons, and they are awarded one hundred and fifty thousand dollars Steve argues that this is a lot of money and doesn't really have an argument as to why he feels it's a lot of money. But at the end of the day, the Fultons lost their beloved daughter, Monica and Aaron lost their mom. No amount of money will ever bring her back and bring back the loss that that family has experienced. But at the same time. This civil trial is important because vider Police Department obviously didn't do what they were supposed to do in this investigation, and if he was involved, they never were able to bring charges against him. So the fact that the Fultons did this civil suit in order to kind of take back everything that they thought was the truth and have it be out there, have it be public record, which it is, and have their day in Core seemingly, I one thousand percent support that because I feel like if I was ever in that situation, I would do the same thing, because you can't just sit back and not do anything when you wholeheartedly believe in your gut that what you know is true is true. So where does everything stand today? Steve lives somewhere in Houston. Dorothy Kathy's mom passed away in two thousand and seven at the age of seventy three. Monica, Kathy and Steve's daughter, passed away in twenty eleven at the age of twenty seven due to a drug overdose, and James Fulton just passed away in September of this year at the age of ninety four. And when I speak about the Fultons, I respect them a lot. I don't care what side of the coin you're on. I think they very much held their own, they stood their ground, they met in business. James Fulton's actions putting up the billboards is the reason I became familiar with Kathy's story, and I think they are a great example of a family that isn't just sitting still and waiting for something to happen. They are making moves, they're taking action, and they are making things happen on their own, even if it's just making people really uncomfortable and putting up billboards with accusations of a spouse being involved in another spouse's murder. It's bold and a lot of. People wouldn't have the guts to do it, and I fully respect it, and that is just my opinion. Like I said, no matter what side of the coin you're on, in listening to this episode, whether you do think that somebody else had something to do with Kathy's death or you think that Steve Page was involved, I think at the end of the day, it's important to know that she was a mom, she was a daughter, she was a sister, she was very loved everybody that knew or loved her, and she did not deserve to have her life ended in such a horrific way, and remembering her and who she was and all that she left behind is more important than anything. And just hoping that whoever did take her life struggles with what they did every single day and it eats them up inside. And maybe one day they'll get tired of hiding from what they've done and they'll decide to come forward. That's all that we can hope for. So thank you guys so much for listening to Kathy's story. I think it's a super important one to tell a cautionary tale, nonetheless, and I think it's important, like I said, that we remember Kathy for who she was and the truth behind her life and not all the lies that came out about her after her death.
