right now in true crime world, we are first going to start off with

the judge in the Alec Baldwin rest case has decided to uphold his involves Terry
00:01:15
manslaughter charge. There's been like a few different things happening where they've tried to
00:01:21
get this charge dismissed, but the judge has decided to uphold it on a
00:01:26
ruling that happened on Friday, June twenty eighth, So he is set to
00:01:32
stand trial in July of this year. I think this trial is going to
00:01:36
be really interesting. We you know, kind of loosely talked about the Hannah
00:01:41
Gutier's retrial and her role in all of this, So it's going to be
00:01:45
really interesting to see what goes on in Alec Baldwin's trial. I assume he's
00:01:49
probably going to take the stand on his behalf to try to explain his side
00:01:53
of things, but it's going to be interesting to see what all goes down.
00:01:59
I think it's going to be a very intense, interesting trial. I've
00:02:05
never really had like a soft warm spot for the Baldwins, so it's going
00:02:08
to be curious to see kind of how this pans out and what all transpires.

But I will be sure to keep you guys updated on that. And

the next thing that we are going to talk about is the Karen Reed trial.

So on Friday. You know, they have been in deliberations trying to
00:02:29
come up with a verdict. On Friday, they came back and said that
00:02:32
they were deadlocked. They weren't able to come up with a unanimous decision,
00:02:38
and the judge basically told them, you need to go back and try again
00:02:42
try to come up with this unanimous decision. They of course went to the
00:02:46
end of Friday, and they are on break for the weekend and then they
00:02:52
will resume on Monday. So this one is wild. I haven't really talked
00:02:58
a lot about it in major detail, but essentially, Karen Reid is on
00:03:04
trial for the murder of her boyfriend who is a police officer, and the
00:03:10
circumstances of his death are interesting because they went to this social gathering at one
00:03:19
of the fellow police officers' homes and John O'Keeffe, who was Karen Reid's boyfriend,
00:03:24
ended up dead at this event. So the prosecution is of course claiming
00:03:32
that Karen Reid was upset and angry and intoxicated and she ended up running him
00:03:39
over with her Lexus SUV and then left him outside in the snow to die.
00:03:46
Now, the defense is very much saying that the evidence are suggesting that
00:03:52
John O'Keefe was killed by potentially one of the one or several of his cop
00:03:58
colleagues, and they ended up dumping his body outside and then framed Karen for
00:04:02
the murder. Personally, I do not think Karen is guilty. I think
00:04:08
the evidence it's very all over the place. The testimony of the law enforcement
00:04:13
people who are present that night and other people who are present that night is
00:04:15
all over the place. It contradicts itself left and right. I don't think
00:04:19
Karen is the most likable person. I don't feel like she gives off the
00:04:26
warm and fuzzies. But I don't think she's guilty. And I definitely feel
00:04:30
like they are framing her, and the cop brotherhood is sticking together, and
00:04:34
I don't want another innocent person to be in prison. So it's going to
00:04:39
be interesting to see what comes out of this. Like I said, they're
00:04:43
going to restart deliberation on Monday, and they're going to see hopefully that they
00:04:47
can come up maybe hopefully with a verdict, and we are going to see
00:04:53
from there. I will be sure to keep you guys updated on that.

Another thing I want to talk about is Lorie Valley is set to stand trial
00:05:00
for the attempted murder on Brandon Boudreau, her ex nephew in law, and
00:05:08
the murder of her husband, Charles Fallow. They're wanting to extend that trial
00:05:15
out, push it out until twenty twenty five, because they have a crap
00:05:19
ton of documents to go through. There's a lot of discovery, there's a
00:05:23
lot of phone call evidence and all the other technological evidence that they have to
00:05:29
go through. So they are asking to push that trial out. So I
00:05:33
will be sure to keep you guys updated on that we are slowly but surely
00:05:36
getting there. But they understand, of course, she has the right to
00:05:43
have a speedy trial, but they also have to prepare themselves for what they're
00:05:46
getting into, which is a heck of a lot with all of this evidence,
00:05:50
and we want to of course make sure that we know allegedly that she
00:05:56
was involved in these situations. However, we want to make sure that there's
00:06:00
no grounds for appeals or anything else coming up, so we want to give
00:06:04
both sides time to prepare their cases. Last thing I want to talk about
00:06:11
I haven't brought it up on here, but there were two firefighters who were
00:06:14
missing and they are named Reagan Anderson and Chandler coup Bonder. So they used
00:06:20
to date. They were in a relationship at one point in time, but
00:06:25
they had been broken up recently. They dated for a few years. They
00:06:30
were both firefighters. They went missing on June twenty fourth, and there had
00:06:34
been a lot of people alluding to the fact, including Chandler's family, alluding
00:06:39
to the fact that he was potentially in danger and in harm's way. Apparently,
00:06:45
on June twenty second, cops arrested Reagan because she ended up confronting Chandler,
00:06:51
I guess about the relationship, and she ended up keeping his car.
00:06:56
And then that following Monday, Chandler had called his mom and said, Reagan
00:07:00
is blowing up my phone, and then they went missing shortly thereafter. So,
00:07:05
unfortunately, their bodies have been found alongside Reagan's vehicle in Cook County,
00:07:14
which is east of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. This is really sad and tragic.

It's obvious it was a probably not so good situation. It's gonna be interesting
00:07:25
to see if this was a murder suicide. It sounds like Chandler, unfortunately,
00:07:30
is the victim in this, which I feel like more and more lately,
00:07:32
we have been seeing a slew and an influx of women offenders. We
00:07:39
have Lori Valo, we have Corey Richans, we have Shanna Gardner, we
00:07:43
now have this Reagan girl. There has been so many women offenders lately,
00:07:48
and I don't understand what it is. It completely boggles my mind. I
00:07:53
don't know how anybody could ever take someone else's life, but more and more
00:07:57
lately, when you're hearing about it being a woman who is harming their significant
00:08:01
other or harming their children, it just completely boggles my mind. But that
00:08:09
was just released just now, so I will continue to keep you guys updated
00:08:13
on that one. But regardless, Reagan and Chandler's families definitely need our prayers
00:08:18
because they are experiencing probably the toughest day of their lives at the moment.
00:08:24
But I will be sure to keep you guys updated on that one. And

I feel like that's pretty much it for right now in True Crime, And

we are going to go ahead and get started with Part two of the North
00:08:35
Bay Psychiatric Hospital disappearances. Alrighty guys, we are jumping in to part two
00:08:41
of the North Bay Psychiatric Hospital Disappearances. We are going to be covering the
00:08:46
other three people that disappeared from North Bay in the following years following the first
00:08:52
three disappearances. Now, one thing to really keep in mind that all of
00:08:58
these patients went missing, well, they were under the care of the hospital,
00:09:03
and they're all still actively missing today. No remains have ever been found,
00:09:09
they've never been located. They very well could be out there living under
00:09:13
an entirely different identity, but I feel like the chances of that are pretty
00:09:18
slim. So the question is how did all of these people, first of
00:09:24
all, manage to leave this hospital pretty easily? I think, especially when
00:09:31
you're dealing with mental health, you're going to be dealing with people who don't
00:09:35
feel like they need to be there or don't want to be there and will
00:09:39
try to escape. But there also should be safety measures in place to prevent
00:09:43
this from happening. Now. I know things are a lot different today than
00:09:48
they were back then, and hopefully the hospital has learned from all of these
00:09:54
mistakes, because it is a big deal. I did a story on a
00:09:58
girl named tim Surdam who was at a U shelter in Saint Charles, Missouri,
00:10:05
and she was there for a couple days and then ended up just completely
00:10:09
disappearing, and they were okay to come and go from this home, which
00:10:15
as a home for runaways. It's interesting considering she was a runaway and they
00:10:20
just let her go and she has never been seen or heard from since.
00:10:26
So it kind of opens up the question to what are these facilities doing to
00:10:31
keep the patients that are at them safe and how many changes have been made
00:10:35
over the years to adjust and make sure that things like this don't happen.
00:10:41
Because if it happens once once is a lot, But if it happens six
00:10:46
times, you're talking about six different people who have gone missing, six different
00:10:50
families who have been impacted. And six is a lot for one place.
00:10:56
One is a lot. Six is an extraordinary amount. We are going to
00:11:00
go ahead and dive in to the next person that went missing, and that
00:11:07
is a thirty four year old guy named Russell Howford. Now he was thirty
00:11:11
four at the time of his disappearance. He was a voluntary patient at the
00:11:16
hospital. It's not really known what was going on with him mentally at the
00:11:20
time, if he was mentally ill, if he was suffering with some depression
00:11:24
anxiety. There's not really a lot out there in regards to why he was
00:11:28
there, but he ended up leaving the facility on foot. He left wearing
00:11:35
only a long sleeve shirt, jeans, and running shoes. So this particular
00:11:39
day, it was April seventh of two thousand, it was extremely cold in
00:11:43
North Bay. It was ten degrees celsius. The windshill was at below twenty
00:11:48
negative twenty degrees and it was very windy and it was snowing, So it
00:11:54
was not a good type of situation to be out in this kind of cold
00:11:58
weather. They, of course, the hospital reported him missing and they searched
00:12:05
for him. They searched the area around the hospital, in an area off
00:12:07
Highway eleven where they believed he had went because there was a passerby that saw
00:12:13
somebody matching the description of Russell along the highway. But after three days of
00:12:20
searching, they turned up with nothing, and law enforcement has said that they
00:12:26
don't believe that there's any foul play that is suspected in Russell's disappearance. But
00:12:30
nothing has ever been found again in regards to where he is gone. We
00:12:33
haven't found any remains. We have no proof that he is still alive and
00:12:37
with us. At the time of his disappearance. Russell had thick black or
00:12:43
brown hair, brown eyes, a thin build with a darker complexion. He
00:12:48
also had a scar on his abdomen. There was a article that was published
00:12:52
in twenty sixteen about Russell and as of that time, police were seeking more
00:13:00
information in regards to Russell's disappearance. They went to the area where Russell disappeared
00:13:05
in two thousand. One of the officers that was investigating Russell's disappearance initially in
00:13:11
two thousand came back to do this article in twenty sixteen and he said that
00:13:16
these sightings confirmed the type of clothing that he was last seen wearing, and
00:13:20
the reason people were calling to report this was because the clothing was just not
00:13:26
conducive to the weather that was going on at the time, meaning he was
00:13:28
not dressed for negative twenty degree weather. And then he went on to say
00:13:33
that the initial officers came up right away and started searching the main roads and
00:13:39
trails, and he said, the reason that he's going to call them trails
00:13:43
is because that time of year, even getting around in a vehicle is tough
00:13:46
and making our presence known so that if he is out here and he is
00:13:50
cold, or in need that he would need to be able to walk towards
00:13:52
us end quote. So they said during the initial search and investigation they used
00:13:58
horns, lights and sirens to try to capture Russell's attention. There was footprints
00:14:03
that they spotted near the end of the road that they were searching, but
00:14:05
nothing, like I said, has come up. And then they are quoted
00:14:11
as to saying not finding any sign of him at that point. There was
00:14:13
an assessment made by the duty shift that we were going to organize an intensive
00:14:16
search with more resources as soon as possible, which they ended up doing and
00:14:22
they turned up with nothing. But they are hoping with this twenty sixteen article
00:14:28
and putting the story back out there, that something will jog in someone's mind
00:14:33
and someone will come forward with information. They are quoted as to saying,
00:14:37
there's always some type of evidence, despite the time that has gone by.
00:14:41
End quote. We did intensive interviews, and other than the sighting up here
00:14:45
earlier in the evening, we received no other sightings end quote. The police
00:14:48
officers that initially worked the investigation sixteen years later did go to the site where
00:14:54
Russell was last seen. They invited media to also visit the location just so
00:14:58
they could see what kind of area they were dealing with, and again putting
00:15:03
the story out there for people to realize that this happened. Now, this
00:15:09
was twenty sixteen. That's almost an additional ten years later. So if Russell
00:15:13
is still out there, he would be fifty eight years old today. Keep
00:15:18
in mind he was thirty four when he disappeared. A lot of time has
00:15:20
passed since Russell went missing, and it is just another example of somebody who
00:15:28
literally got up one day and walked off the grounds of the North Bay Psychiatric
00:15:33
Hospital and vanished literally into thin air. All right, next person, we
00:15:37
are going to talk about their disappearance. I find this one to be probably
00:15:41
the most interesting. I had mentioned in last episode that there was a patient
00:15:46
that ended up disappearing that had tried to run away multiple times, like multiple
00:15:52
multiple, multiple times from the North Bay Psychiatric Hospital and then ended up officially
00:15:58
running away and she is still missing to this day. So I'm going to
00:16:03
talk to you about Don Carise. Her full name is don Eva Carrise.
00:16:07
She was forty three at the time of her disappearance. Don's story is really
00:16:11
sad. She was a patient at the North Bay Psychiatric hospital for a total
00:16:18
of eighteen years before she disappeared, so she had short term memory loss and
00:16:26
had some cognitive issues. She had unfortunately suffered a heart attack on Christmas Eve
00:16:32
in the years prior, which ended up giving her a brain injury, and
00:16:37
that brought on the short term memory loss and the cognitive deficits. She had
00:16:42
children and a family, and her being placed into this psychiatric facility I can't
00:16:48
imagine was easy for her because she probably woke up every day and didn't realize
00:16:53
what was going on and why she was there. Her story is just really
00:16:56
sad, and it just makes me want to cry because I can't imagine.
00:17:02
It's kind of like fifty first dates, where you wake up every day and
00:17:04
you don't know what your life is and then someone tells you, oh,
00:17:07
you had a heart attack and you have brain damage, and now you can't
00:17:11
see your kids every day. I can't imagine don dealing with this on a
00:17:17
day to day basis. Her family did decide though, that it was best
00:17:19
for her to be in a facility where they could properly supervise her and make
00:17:26
sure that she was being kept safe, because her daughter said that after she
00:17:30
got her brain injury. She would often repeat herself. She had a really
00:17:34
hard time remembering things. And of course, in a situation like that,
00:17:38
when the person that is sick doesn't realize how sick they are, it's really
00:17:45
hard for the family to try to navigate that. And the resources back in
00:17:49
the time that Dawn had her brain injury aren't what they are today. So
00:17:56
the family thought best that they put her at a facility where she can be
00:18:00
kept safe, monitored, and of course they would go visit and all of
00:18:03
those things. So, like I said, Don had tried to disappear several
00:18:08
times from the facility prior prior to two thousand and one, two years prior,
00:18:15
she had left the hospital grounds she wanted to go see her kids.
00:18:18
They were living in the Kirkland Lake area at the time, and they found
00:18:23
on she was hitchhiking along Highway eleven, which was in the complete opposite direction
00:18:27
of Kirkland Lake. And they said that since nineteen ninety seven, Don had
00:18:33
eloped nine times from North Bay Psychiatric Hospital and she would be found later by
00:18:41
hospital staff walking either on the hospital grounds or on Highway eleven. So obviously
00:18:48
Don is a flight risk. We do not blame her. Her short term
00:18:52
memory is causing her to be a flight risk. But let's talk about North
00:18:56
Bay Psychiatric Hospitals policies and why is she let to just like wander around and
00:19:03
constantly escape? Nine times? Is a heck of a lot, especially now
00:19:07
the fact that we're going to be talking about Don escaped for one final time
00:19:11
and has never been found. That is unacceptable. If that happened in today's
00:19:18
day of age, like people would be losing their ever loving minds. At
00:19:23
approximately five pm on Thursday, August ninth of two thousand and one, there
00:19:29
was a time at the hospital where patients would meet in the ward. That
00:19:34
down was they would meet in a common room for dinner, and the hospital
00:19:38
staff noticed that Dawn was not there and they couldn't find her on the ward,
00:19:44
so they again began searching the hospital grounds. They searched along Highway eleven
00:19:48
and they could not find her or any trace of her. So the next
00:19:52
morning they went ahead and contacted the North Bay Police Department and reported that she
00:19:59
was missing. Police then conducted their investigation. They interviewed different people that worked
00:20:04
at the hospital. They interviewed her family, her friends, and they let
00:20:10
out into the community that she was missing, and the media began to cover
00:20:15
it. There was a couple of reports from members of the community that spotted
00:20:22
Dawn possibly, but they never were able to confirm these sightings and they were
00:20:26
not able to locate Dawn. All reports said that Down was a very nice
00:20:32
lady. She was very pleasant, even though she had a little bit of
00:20:36
confusion going on, she was a very nice lady. And they do believe
00:20:40
that the reason that she probably left the hospital was to go see her children,
00:20:44
who at the time were still living in the Kirkland Lake area. But
00:20:48
they do think that for whatever reason, she may have been traveling towards a
00:20:52
town called Sudbury, and the people that had her children, whoever her children's
00:20:57
guardians were, had said that they were going to be planning to move to
00:21:03
Sudbury within a year or two. So Down was obviously told that, Hey,
00:21:08
we're going to be moving to Sudbury, and she took that as I'm
00:21:11
going to Sudbury to find my children. So, like I said, Don
00:21:15
was forty three years old when she disappeared. She was wearing a short sleeved,
00:21:21
long pink dress with faint white flowers as a pattern, a buttoned front
00:21:26
and a drawstring that crisscrossed on the back. She was also wearing brownish red
00:21:30
color toad sandal closed toad sandals. She was slender, five six, one
00:21:37
hundred and fifteen pounds, short, brown hair parted in the center, with
00:21:41
green eyes. I think all of these stories are really sad, but I
00:21:45
think Down's is probably the worst because she did suffer from these short term memory
00:21:51
deficits. She had tried to escape multiple times. She was trying to see
00:21:55
her kids. That absolutely breaks my heart that she got out and she has
00:22:03
never been seen since. And you would think that after nine times of trying
00:22:07
to escape that there would be some more safety regulations in place at the North
00:22:14
Base like your ATRA hospital for patients who were prone to elopement, But that
00:22:18
didn't seem to be the case, and Down Cariese has not been seen or
00:22:22
heard from sense And like I said earlier, don could be out there living
00:22:27
an entirely different life as an entirely different person, not knowing who she is
00:22:33
due to her short term memory loss, and that is really sad that she
00:22:37
wasn't protected at a facility that her family placed her at so she could be
00:22:41
safe and protected. That has to be so heartbreaking and devastating for her poor
00:22:48
family and her poor children. I'm sure they were young at the time that
00:22:52
don received her brain injury, and growing up in a situation like that is
00:22:57
hard enough, and then knowing that she disappeared at the place that was supposed
00:23:03
to be keeping her safe just really tragic and horrible all around. Last disappearance
00:23:08
we're going to talk about is the disappearance in twenty ten of a man named
00:23:14
Glenn Warren Neil Wesley. He was only twenty eight years old at the time
00:23:19
of his disappearance. Again, I'm not really sure why Glenn was a patient
00:23:25
at the North Bay Psychiatric Hospital, but regardless of that, he was granted
00:23:30
a short term pass on the day of September fifteenth of twenty ten, which
00:23:36
was his twenty eighth birthday, and he left the facility at one pm,
00:23:42
and that is the day that he turned twenty eight years old, and he
00:23:47
never returned back. The hospital staff believed that he may have been headed to
00:23:52
North Bay's downtown core. He never came back later on in the day and
00:23:57
they contacted the North Bay Police Service to report him missing. They of course
00:24:03
searched for Glenn nothing would turn up. They interviewed all the different people that
00:24:07
potentially could have come in contact with him that day, they interviewed hospital personnel,
00:24:14
and all attempts to locate him have come up with negative results. Unfortunately,
00:24:19
there have been some unconfirmed sightings of him in some areas around North Bay,
00:24:26
but his case remains unsolved to this day. So I have to talk
00:24:30
about this one because this one really bothers me. So this was twenty ten,
00:24:36
that's not that long ago. I mean it is, but it's not.
00:24:40
So. You have people in a psychiatric facility, whether they're involuntarily or
00:24:47
voluntarily, and I just feel like there probably should be some type of regulation
00:24:52
on the passes that they give these people, given the fact that they've already
00:24:59
had five people disappear from the grounds of this hospital, the psychiatric hospital.
00:25:04
Why are you going to grant a psychiatric patient regardless of why he's there.
00:25:10
Your goal is to keep him safe, and you grant him a pass to
00:25:14
go out on his birthday. So a lot of the times when you're in
00:25:18
a psychiatric setting, it could be depression, it could be anxiety, you
00:25:23
could be dealing with some bipolar or a plethora of other diagnoses right, and
00:25:33
a lot of the times the patients are medicated for those diagnoses. When you
00:25:37
tell me that someone wants to go out on a day pass for their birthday,
00:25:40
their twenty eighth birthday, I'm thinking they're probably going to go out,
00:25:44
and they're probably going to drink. Likely more likely than not, they're going
00:25:47
to have a couple of adult beverages, and mixing adult beverages with these psych
00:25:52
medicines could cause something not so great to happen. I just don'tunderstand why he
00:26:00
was granted a day pass. That completely boggles my mind. I sure hope
00:26:06
that they've changed their ways and they don't do things like this anymore, because
00:26:11
you would think after the first five disappearances they would have learned, But unfortunately
00:26:15
they did it and in twenty ten, this happened again with Glenn. Now.
00:26:21
The hospital officially closed its doors in twenty eleven and the patients were reallocated
00:26:26
to this other like facility where it kind of is a facility that houses all
00:26:33
sorts of different patients and such. So hopefully they've changed their policies and have
00:26:37
gotten their lives together, because this is a really, really bad look.

The North Bay psychiatric facility was demolished in twenty thirteen, like I said in
00:26:48
the last episode, and it now just remains land. From everything I've seen,
00:26:55
Glenn is still considered missing. He would be forty two years old today.
00:26:59
He is a last scene wearing a black jacket, black shirt, black
00:27:03
pants. He has brown eyes, black hair that is short but does come
00:27:08
over his ears. He weighs approximately three hundred pounds and is six two and
00:27:15
his build is described as heavy, and he has a scar on his left
00:27:19
wrist. If you do have information in any of these cases, you are
00:27:25
asked to call the North Bay Police Service at seven oh five four nine seven

not even realize you know something, or you saw something and not even realize

it. Because I do have quite a few Canadian listeners, and I really
00:27:52
wanted to do this story because it just intrigued me so much that six people
00:27:56
over the span of multiple decades went missing from the exact same place and nobody
00:28:03
knows anything that completely blows my mind. So this epidemic of these people disappearing
00:28:11
was also brought up on another podcast called Whereabouts Unknown by a gal named Ellen
00:28:18
White. She is a former private investigator, and she went ahead and took
00:28:22
it upon herself to assemble a team which included a genealogist. She wanted to
00:28:29

that went missing are not people who are sophisticated in their thinking or had access

formulated plans to get away. These are people who slipped through the cracks end

quote. And I think this is so important because she is one hundred percent

right. These people didn't come up in their minds with oh, I'm going

to do this to escape from North Bay, and if they had people on

the outside, they could not contact those people without help from the staff.

So somebody that was working inside of North Bay probably knows a heck of a

lot more than has been brought to light now. There have been former employees
00:29:21
of North Bay who spoke about how the hospital was understaffed and that they were
00:29:26
often overwhelmed with housing patients and they had various degrees of patients in there with
00:29:33
varying mental and physical capabilities and disabilities. Now, each of these six missing
00:29:38
persons from North Bay has been uploaded to the major case management system, and
00:29:44
the majority of the six have DNA between their family or direct DNA on file,
00:29:51
so that is helpful of course, in the investigation going forward. If
00:29:55
anything were to pop up, they would be able to match that DNA and
00:29:57
confirm the identity of that person. Don Caris's oldest daughter said that her family

has spoken briefly with detectives over the years, but they haven't received very many
00:30:08
details or any updates, and is quoted as to saying, we would just
00:30:12
like to know what has happened and find some closure. So that is the

story of the six who disappeared from North Bay Psychiatric Hospital, and I do

feel like there's probably more to this story that we don't know yet because it
00:30:30
hasn't been properly investigated yet. I feel like a lot of these stories probably

slipped through the cracks, unfortunately, because either the departments didn't have time or
00:30:41
it wasn't of top priority to try to figure out what happened. But I

do feel like these six people all disappeared under circumstances that probably they didn't plan

and carry out on their own. There was probably someone on the inside that

was helping them, or they just weren't properly supervised. They could have been
00:31:04
short staffed, there might not have been good management. All of these things

are so important when you're running a hospital type facility, but especially important when
00:31:11
you're running a psychiatric type facility for sure. So that is the story of

North Bay. I really enjoyed researching this one and learning all of their stories,
